It seems to be Myxomatosis season again, I keep finding poor sick rabbits! Anybody know the best way to dispatch of a sick bunny? I feel so mean leaving them to suffer and i don't exactly carry the shot gun with me when I'm walking the dogs lol.

I came across one today when I was on the horse. My dog was playing with it but she doesn't exactly have the killer instinct to put it out of its misery. I had to take it off her and put it out of reach. Hate seeing them slowly dying, it seems unnecessary!

The b/f dog manages to somehow crush their skulls really quickly... O.o;

My dad shoots them or breaks there neck. I wonder what pet rabbit pie would be like... wonder if the white fluffy ones have more tender meat?

Pheasant is good too and makes a great soup stock.

I must! And pheasant too. Never tried that
Auld Baldy Posted - 09/03/2012 : 21:04:53
OK but try rabbit if you get the chance. It is good.

.............I'll stick with the butchers thanks :P I'm not THAT much of a country woman!

Off with the head and paws. Cut with a heavy knife or cleaver above 'elbow' joints. Cut pelt dowm spine and pull off just like a tight baby-grow romper jacket. Out with the innards and rinse well. Cut into quarters and cook in a traditional stock with onion, celery and carrots etc.. Serve with potatoes and mushrooms. Rare fare!

You should feel (and hear) a nice cricking sound and then you'll have a dead bunny.

The option you then have is to leave it somewhere for the foxes, or bring it home and burn it.
Myxy bunnies shouldn't cause any risk to human when eaten either, just do the normal checks when gutting it (liver etc) and if they look good, then chow down.

Obviously remember to give your hands and arms a good clean before going near others animals, although it should only affect bunnies, it's still cross contamination.

Kinda like doing a bird then? If I see the poor little chap tomorrow i'll put him out of his misery. Or else bring the terrier with me! She's a killing machine lol. The poor spaniels just hold it gently in their mouth and just bring it over bless them! I know there's nothing harmful about eating the myxi ones but i don't think i could bring myself to do it lol. I've never had rabbit actually!

Used to live out in the country, our dogs couldnt kill them, i used to drag my dad out and he would snap their neck if he was in. Horrid nasty disease, broke my heart every time, but couldnt leave them to suffer
lupi lou Posted - 09/03/2012 : 18:27:20
it sounds horrid but the method i was told is to hold them by the hind legs and swing their head against a sharpe corner of a wall twice in quick sucession. i have donethis once itwasn't very pleasent but it did the job. the yard owner sends them on their way with a shovel which is very messy! and i doubt you carry a shovel with you when you are walking the dogs!! its a horrid disease i lost two rabbits to it when i was younger it was so distressing to see.

Aww I hate myxomatosis my pet rabbit had it he had a 50/50 chance of surviving, he did survive but died of other causes later in the year
Auld Baldy Posted - 09/03/2012 : 15:58:50
The only quick and least messy way I can think of is shoulders held in one hand, head turned in the other and a quick twist to break the neck.

Just like wringing out a towel.
