Posted - 12/03/2012 : 17:27:59 My sons friend said he wants to sell his corn snake. He has had the snake since a hatchling and it is now 6 years old. Apparently he is fed up with it and his dad has been cleaning it and feeding it but he dont want to do that anymore. He sent some pics to my son and me being me I had a look at them. WRONG . The snake is sitting in a 3ft viv with one hide and a water bowl and several heaps of old poop . It has a heat mat but NO thermostat . It has a tube light on during the day so thats not good for its eyes . The snake looks like an amel from the pics and a good size and weight. Now I can't stop thinking about it. I have no intention of getting another snake yet and wanted to look for an adult snow or lavender when I do decide to get another. But I go to bed thinking about this poor snake and wake up thinking about it. Remind me not to look at any other pics my sons friend sends. |

Posted - 13/03/2012 : 17:22:50 my fourth was like that. was through a friend who knew i had corns. told me he wasn't being looked after properly and didn't want him anymore. said i could take it. that was when i had one. shortly after my 3rd i got a text out of the blue. next day i picked up the big lad. he was healthy enough but viv was a mess with bowl and hide too small for him, substrate too thick to let heat through and no stat. had no idea what to expect (morph, age, state etc...) got everything for free just wanted shott.
was a wee shame but if the guy really wants him gone he can't expect you to pay for him as well as take him on. should be happy he'd be getting looked after. |

Posted - 12/03/2012 : 21:19:36 He's just playing you, he knows you are a soft touch where snakes are concerned and using that to try to get some money. Don't fall for it, tell him you are not interested. |

Posted - 12/03/2012 : 19:39:04 I can understand asking for money of they are care and welled looked after as you kinda want to sort the genuine people from the free-bee hunters who just want to breed any corn with any corn as baby corns of course net you lots of money.. :p but if you don't care it's cheeky, specially when you know someone will have very good care of it.
I find it funny how people with parrot will pay the new owner to take it off their hands... :p |

Posted - 12/03/2012 : 19:22:47 I think this too Sta~ple, its so annoying when clearly mistreated or under cared for reptiles are still put up for sale. Gumtree and preloved are full of these animals. It really gets my back up that people think they are a disposable or tradeable item and totally forget that they are an animal. To ask £50 for a snake you no longer want in a setup that is unsuitable is disgusting. I also cant understand how people dont have the emotional attachment to their pets, I know they aren't loving or anything but I do love all my animals and couldn't imagine selling them for any reason, if I had to rehome them for some reason it would be free with all the setup etc to ensure their ongoing well being the best I could. |

Trying to explain that the snake needs a stat for the mat and that he is very lucky that the snake has not been burnt and that there is a risk of the mat over heating and causing a fire. As usual in these cases he thinks he knows best. I did say that I could take the snake for him and try to find it a new home. He insists he wont let it go for anything less than £50.
Then he's a fool lol. You can find a common morph and a carpy set-up like that on on pre-loved for £30. He's obviously not that desperate to get rid then. Why is it that unwanted reptiles people always want money for them yet, cats/dogs/birds they seem to part away for free?
Guess he could always try and flog it to a reptile shop. |

If he wants to get rid of it that badly why not make him give you it for free? Can't really expect to sell it and ask for a lot if there is lots of poo and he can't be ****d, at the end of the day he should see it as whats best for the animal.
If you take it for free you could give it disposable hide, newspaper substrate and nick a stat from another snake if your not doubling/what-evering up already on the stats to mats and in the process, try and then just ask for a small re-home fee from whoever wants him?
good plan! |

I know you are right, 4 out of the 6 snakes I own are ones that were no longer wanted one way or another. I've only ever chosen the two I bought from a shop. If I took this one on there would probably be another pop up somewhere being kept in the same way. |

Posted - 12/03/2012 : 18:25:58 thats not good if people aren't commited to having a pet they shouldn't get one! Its so easy to feel sorry for an animal and end up taking on a pet you had no intetion of having. thats how i ended up with our spanial, german shep and the hammy! i've started to be a bit tougher now but it's still hard not to feel sorry for these unfortunate animals! hope the snake finds a nice home. |
