Well, i fed Linguini for the first time this morning..what an experience!

Having let the pinkie thaw, in the packet, i emptied it into a glass of warm water to warm it up a bit. I had such a jump when it fell into the glass.....the whole notion of feeding a snake being what has stopped me from having one in the past. Now i dont particularly like mice but it was still difficult to see the little thing in the glass.... Still, i took deep breaths, reasoned with myself for a while, then took the feeding tongs and put the mouse on a kitchen towel to dry.

At this point my nerves broke and i considered bringing linguini back to the shop.. I cant keep a snake if i am too squimish to feed him. More deep breaths. Hubby offers to do the deed, i turn him down, grab the tongs, dry the mouse , start crying, and ask hubby to open the viv. So , i hover the mouse over Linguini's favourite hide, preparing myself to feed him, when Monsieur, rears up, straightens himself upright, strikes the mouse, rips it from the tongs, sinks back into the hide ( a fake hallowed out tree trunk) and promptly devours it in a matter of moments!! I couldnt believe how quickly the whole thing went! One moment i was standing there blubbing over a dead mouse, and the next moment the mouse was gone. Im still stunned at the speed of the strike, it took a good few seconds to even register what had happened.

Of course then i spent the whole day worrying about he fact that maybe linguini was starving hungry, and maybe i should feed him more (it's those mediterranean genes!)
He is 7 months old ..is one pink/ week enough for him? ? How do i tell if he needs more?

Xx

Ok sounds like a plan - will try and feed two pinkies on sunday - thanks for the "How to guide", though i am now terrified i will find a poo filled mouse with bleeding mouth come feeding time (see other posts). Sigh.

PMSL @ Snake sausages. Just don't get them mixed up with the pork links for your sannies.

Well done Primrose, everything has to eat something and I don't think snakes do very well on Quorn sausages.

One after the other. Wait until the first is about half way down and snakey is moving around again and then feed number 2.

Two pinkies together in the same box, at one time? Or two the same day ?

Aww bless you, I'm so glad you overcame it! It is a bit sad at first, seeing the teeny things, but you do get used to it, after all, they gotta eat, and at least the ones you feed the snake have been put to sleep gently, as opposed to in the wild when they're live. keep at it :K

I'd try giving Ling 2 pinkies next week. My 10 month old is on Fuzzies and my 6 month old is on double pinks (well when he decides he wants to come back home)

Also, Good work on confronting your unease about feeding your snake. I still cringe sometimes :p

Just think Primrose. We eat meat, the only difference is that someone else cuts it up so it doesn't look like a cute little cow/pig/chicken etc. The only difference is here is that you can see the mouses face.

With that said, I've convinced my mother that my snakes eat 'special snake sausages'. She knows I'm lying but it is what she has to believe to be able to love em :p

Pleased the first feed went well. General rule of thumb is if the mouse leaves a visible bump in the snakes tummy its the right size, no bump then the snake needs the next size up. The prey should be no more than 1.5 x the width of the the widest part of the snake. I have a hatchie that is 10 months old and has been and awkward feeder that has only been taking 1 pink a week, she refuses to feed at 5 days only on day 7, she has however this week just taken 2 pinks, so if you're not sure you could always offer 2 pinks at one feed, if she manages and digests then she'd be ready for fuzzies, but only if you follow the rule above.

Glad you were able to do it in the end

again, pics and weights would help us out better. But 1x pinkie for 7 months generally isnt enough. xx

Hee hee, great that the 1st feed was a success!! I would have thought 1 pinky wasn't enough at 7 months, but without pics/weight etc it's tricky to say. Leave it for this week (you need to leave him a week to settle in without handling) then get him out, weigh him, and ideally I'd feed in a separate tub so you can get a good look to see if the pink leaves a bump (which it probably won't at that age, but if it does then you don't want to move up yet).

how big is he hun weight etc if u can get a pic of him by something that would be good did he have much of a lump after the mouse had gone all the way down
