Posted - 20/09/2012 : 10:21:55 Hi everyone, I am getting a bigger viv ready for Frank from his small faunarium and am now looking at heating from lamps. I think that a normal light bulb fixture should do it but can I have some advice please as to whether this is not the case or should be something more precise? I have the heatpad and am sure i can put it directly in the viv under the aspen? I have ordered the thermometer but not sure on the lamp, cos i guess i could make it myself from a connection and wire etc??? and get a cover of course? Also should I put newspaper on the heatpad first then aspen cos of it being too hot? Thanks. Also please, there are no vents in the viv at the back whatsoever so have got 2 palm sized vents coming from ebay but would I need more, the viv is about 2 ft long and foot and half high approx.?? Many thanks

Posted - 20/09/2012 : 12:24:04 It is advised to seal all joins in viv with sealant anyway (I think just at the bottom - to stop spillages etc seeping through) so check that this has been done, if not you can do those at the same time lol :) |

Posted - 20/09/2012 : 10:40:17 Yeah the heat mat will be plenty warm enough, again aslong as its stat'd with a thermostat and monitored with a digital thermometer you'll be fine.
You could fill the hole with Aquarium silicon. That usually takes about 48hrs to set so if you put that in, let it dry then start filling the viv. I did this when i bought a new viv. I used aquarium sealant on all internal joints.

Posted - 20/09/2012 : 10:34:35 Thanks so just the heatpad is enough? Another query/problem. I got the viv from ebay cheap, it has a worn hole in the base and it is made of chipboard. The hole is about cm deep but not deep enough to make a problem with the base. But i guess it needs some sort of treatment/sealant before Frank goes in, cos of desease or other problem. I think it needs something like clear varnish over it but sure that would be bad cos of the chemicals, any suggestions or would be ok to use if covered with newspaper then aspen?? |

Posted - 20/09/2012 : 10:24:51 If you are using a heat mat then a lamp isnt really needed.
You can put the mat straight in the viv, with a thin layer of aspen over it. Providing you have the mat stat'd it wont get hot enough to do damage to the aspen.
Regarding vents two will be sufficent on that size viv. Mine only has two also. |

Posted - 20/09/2012 : 10:24:22 most people will tell ya a lamp isnt the best move for corns, i say stick with the mat :)
Yeh, mat goes under the aspen, dont worry with the newspaper, cos if the mats statted it wont get that hot at all :)
Those two vents should be fine, just make sure they're sealed in so little frank cant push his way out :) |
