Well eventually been dragged into the 21st century and so am getting a laptop next week. What I know about computers you could write on a pinhead lol. So apologising for the mistakes, misprints and the total lack of sense in the next few weeks as I try to get to grips with it thanks.

You'll be fine I am sure. My parents, one in the late 60's and the other in the early 70's, have got to grips with a laptop and have a pc. They are always shopping on it now and my dad even has radios hooked up to his to watch and listen to the ships dock and planes land at heathrow etc. In the last few months mother learnt to take pics on her mobile phone and is a wiz at texting, though we sometimes get a text thats not ment for us. If they can do it then I know you can.

My sons have tried to get me on a computer for years and my answer was how do you use a computer and drive a truck but have had to give in and give it a go. My OH says that if I throw it at the wall I won't get another one lol.

Portable is always kind of tongue in cheek when it comes to computers.

My first 'portable' weighed 20kg and had a little 9" screen and a handle ( http://home.claranet.nl/users/pb0aia/cm/compaq1.jpg )

Portable with laptops/tablets/similar is really about porting it from plug to plug.

That's really one of the only differences between a portable and a desktop. The other is your connection to other stuff, computers, printers, the internet and such. With a desktop there is a usually a rat's nest of wires coming out the back that does the job. A laptop needs all the same 'connections' to be useful, and typically they use wireless links (think cordless phone/or a set of handie talkies).

A mouse is also a great add on. A laptop will for sure have a touchpad/button mouse but a real one is so much easier to use.

After that it's all different flavours of the same sort of thing. Like cars, they might be a different colour or a different shape but they're still all cars.

Gosh. Have you been accessing the forum on your mobile then? Laptops are great, but unfortunately they have quite a limited lifespan compared to pcs. Mine is quite old now (so wildly out of date, one of the first vista laptops) and it's on the way out, helicopter noises from the fan and bad noises from the hard drive, plus battery is knackered. It's not worth repairing it so I will be replacing it when it does give up the ghost. It's done really well though because it gets used a lot and the noises started about 8 months ago now....

Thanks for the offer of help Thorne but this will be my first computer lol. I started using mobiles when they were that big you carried the battery seperately and only learnt to text 2yrs ago. So you can imagine the fun I am going to have lol

How many years difference between the machines? Are you going from xp => windows 7?
