ive just ordered my new vivarium for which the guy at the shop is building it and setting it up for me.The thing is ive asked for a ceramic heat bulb.is that going to be enough or should it have a heat mat also.i asked for a bulb as my snake is shy and thought it might encourage her to come out and bask more.what do you think folks. |

I have a ceramic heater (with sufficient guard) that pokes into the top of the hot end. Directly underneath this is the "hot end hide". This absorbs the heat from the ceramic bulb and radiates into the inside of the hide. At the cold end there is another hide.
This works as it's a 4 foot long viv, however I suspect that in a smaller viv you might not get the required temperature differential between the two sides, in which case a mat would be better.
The whole thing is controled by an automated night and day thermostat. I still have a thermometer in each end to be sure.
Hmm. I suppose that's not a great deal of help but food for thought! |

Yep, either mat or ceramic will be fine - provided the appropriate thermostat is used of course ;) |

I think this is very common. Mine are the same. Although If they feel me near the glass they tend to come out. Usually either think I've got something for them or they want to come outside the vivarium for a wonder.
I've used LED's in all my vivarium's, Personally think it looks neater. Plus I don't have to rely on a bulb for heat source and light and I'm sure its cheaper.

Hi Yalovit,
As Gmac has pointed out, both do the job equally. I would like to point out, that corns are crepuscular. They are mostly active at twilight / dawn and dusk. Don't get me wrong they do come out in the day. But both of mine are active at night at around 10pm onwards.
I have even tried tricking them with timer lights, but this made no difference. They are very clever snakes. So in all honesty ceramic bulb or heat mat (with led as lighting). The only difference is going to be running costs. Although its personal preference. |

snakes dont take their heat from the belly they take it anyway they can get it and that includes ambient air temps from any heat source. lighting is just as good as any mat. Ceramics are fine for corns and wont need a heatmat to assist with any heating requirements |

If your snake is shy, it'll probably just mean she doesn't get much heat. Snakes take in most of the heat through their belly so a heat mat is much more advisable. I have a light for Diego, but only because he prefers to sleep out in the open rather than in his hides, but he also has his heat mat. |
