are heat mats ok to be put on a table then viv on top

Yep, underneath faunarium is perfect, under about 1/2 to 1/3, to create warm and cold side. I had my first faun with a heatmat sat on an old chopping board, to protect the shelf it was on. I later used polystyrene tile under the heatmat, as it reflected more heat into the faunarium that way. Have a look at the stickies, setting up a hatchling, that's quite a good one :-)

Underneath if plastic will be fine, ensure that there is a cool end at all times.

It's always best to get a dual probed digital thermometer. This will allow you to monitor the temps.

If it's a wooden Viv, then no, but if it's a plastic faunarium, it's ok. :-)
