Well I've always been a bit of a DIY'er. Then built my own Vivarium's. Which everyone who sees them always says how amazing they look, although this may be biased.

So is there a market out there for this kind of thing ? Would you pay for this ?

I'd say there is a market but you have a lot to compete with... I got Cereus' viv from a friends husband(no discounts either as I only know them through someone else) for £70 including the courier price... It came from Evesham, Worcestershire and I live in Sheffield, South Yorkshire and it's 36x18x18in. The most of that cost was the glass and the viv itself was £40, the courier was £30. Just a warning as there are quite a few people that make custom vivs and although mine was only a simple 36x18x18in viv but it's a good quality and well build. I have pictures up on my most recent updates thread in the photo section if you want to see it for some ideas.

Well consider all the costs in building it, the unit itself then the extras, plus your time gone in. People you know could possibly buy them cheaper off you than direct from a shop, as the shop would want a cut themselves. Consider postage too if you plan on shipping them, £150 (random example lol) sounds good until £50 shipping and handling is added on!

May not be entirely impossible. This is the first I've made I have many designs in mind and I'm thinking about selling these to people and flat pack may be an option

If you made a display one and got it into a shop, people could always order and then you make it/deliver/fit it, leaving the original instore, you would have to be careful Ikea didn't stop selling that particular piece of furniture though.

Cheers Lee, will have a look into it. Keep you all updated

Thanks for all the advice. Just got to find people who keep reptiles now. I'm the only one I know. Maybe ill make another one take the risk and sell it cheap on the net with install and see if I get any more customers.

I'd say there's definitely a market for a custom built ones. Especially if they look as good as the one you've made, and fit with the rest of furniture, etc. I'd maybe start small, do a couple of vivs for people you know, and keep a portfolio of everything you do. Then maybe take some of the pics to your local reptile shop, and see of they'd recommend you to their customers, or let you advertise in the shop. A website would be good as well...

Sounds like a good idea. Problem then would be putting it together. This would mean I'd have to develop some instructions. With most things this size, many people don't want the hassle of putting it all together.

Suppose if they sold at a good price, I could invest the time to develop instructions

Thanks for all the feedback. I also work full time that's the problem. Investing in tools and materials and my time, would it be worth the effort. I would need to make some kind of profit. It's knowing what people would pay for this?
LukeW Posted - 21/08/2013 : 10:12:52
It's just trial and error mate, just ask about and if there's enough interest and you have the time go for it, I would but work all day so wouldn't have the time to make any :)

Those are seriously lovely! :) If I was looking for a viv (which I will be in about a year-ish I suppose) I would love to have something like this. Unfortunately it wouldn't work in my current house as there is literally no room for another whole cabinet, but I can definitely see them being popular if you did a lot of advertising.

As for getting local shops to sell them, I'm not sure; maybe just show them one and let them be impressed? Also give them a good price so they get a good mark-up?

In currently in the market for a new viv and have been looking at custom ones, I would say there is a market

If i was needing one then yes, it is seriously brilliant!
I think you would do quite well selling these

There is a market however, how well it is doing is another question. There are many places offering custom vivs. I guess how well you do depends on your location and if you could get your local reptile shop to support another local business :p

I would pay had I not already a stack I guess if the maker of them was near me, could drop them off since most custom vivs are not flat packed, well ones that I've seen anyway. Oh, and if they could me made in black or glittery purple :p

Your vivs do look nice though :) Looks like the bottom bit could be for hatchies hehe

Thanks both for the nice comments.

They were my first project, If I was to build more they can come in various colours. Black and White also available, as well as all kinds of styles of wood. I think it comes in pink too.

Because It's made from all Ikea products, It can be flat-packed after the adjustments.

I may look into building a few and see if the local reptile shop wants to try and sell them. Any idea's on how to entice them to sell them in their shops?
