I've been getting my creative head on and I have been thinking about making some of my own viv decorations- a few more hides, and bridge thing maybe, I'm planning on using either salt dough, or an air drying clay, depending on what I can find.
What varnish would be suitable for these? I've done a google search and some people say any water based varnish is ok, and some say yacht varnish, others say simple pva, especially on salt dough. I'm confused and don't want to do the wrong thing, obviously things would be left to dry for days and days but wondered if anyone had experience of doing this?

Posted - 17/09/2013 : 10:47:42 if u use varnish and paints straight on polystyrene ya askng for trouble anyway as its way to porous and will act like a sponge. thats why your use the polystyrene to buld the depths an shapes you want then cover it in grout. that then gives you a suitable material for base colours an final finishes.

I have made my own backgrounds in the past and I tried using varnish. This did not go to well as it basically melted the polystyrene, the fumes were terrible. With PVA I'd guess it will be much safer and it will act as a good sealant against liquids.
