Posted - 15/10/2013 : 14:14:13 I was thinking of getting this for the vivarium: The Komodo Tropical Vine Branch.
It's a latex branch with a bendable core. (Like a "Bendy Bully" I imagine). They seem to be selling them everywhere but I can't find any customer comments on them.
Anyone got one?
It does look pretty cool, I like the idea that I could periodically re-shape it to keep things interesting for my snake.

Posted - 25/10/2013 : 08:52:37 I use branches from our apple tree. The first one, I did all the "right " things, I let it dry out, stripped the bark and sapwood, disinfected, poured boiling water... I have nice looking branch, but Baz hates it, it's too smooth to climb now. So, with the second one, I just let it dry for couple of weeks, then scrubbed it with hot water and brush, and Twid loves it. It's got all the bark on, looks more natural, and he can climb it easily.
I had some trees pruned in the field ( ash ), and my friend took several large branches for her royals' s vivs. Just put them straight in. They love it, too. Never had any problems, just don't use poisonous trees, like yews or laburnum, and any trees that are harmful to snakes, like pine or cedar. I'd say most fruit trees ( there are some questions about cherry trees? ) are ok, as would be ash,or oaks, beech, etc. Just nothing too resinous. |

Right up front.. I'm a little more casual about this kind of thing than others on this forum..
"Most" woods are safe.. Cedar is quite bad.. but Maple, Oak, all fruit trees are good.
If you look for it you can finds lists of yes and no that will cover most everything you might find.
If it's freshly knocked down it shouldn't be infected with anything really nasty, let it sit for a bit to dry out. Then cut to fit.

Posted - 24/10/2013 : 11:05:17 That's the "large" size and Vesper's only 12" (you can see the scale if you look at the coconuts in the pic). Can't see it holding an adult snake at all, but for now it's great. |
