Hi all

I always wanted a snake as a kid and was never allowed as my mum would never allow frozen mice to be kept in the freezer.

Having recently got married the wife agreed and actually bought me a 5 week old Amel hatchling and a small faunarium set up as a wedding present. Decided on a dual sex name of Sydney (not very original i know)

Today was the first feed at home, Sydney didn't strike like I expected though, and more just picked it up and swallowed the pinkie.

I didn’t realize that you was supposed to leave them a week before handling so have had it out everyday for 10-15 mins as want to make sure it grows up a friendly snake, hopefully i have done no harm.

Am really looking forward to watching Sydney grow, currently 12.5" long and 9 grams.

Have become slightly obsessed now though and spending every spare minute reading through sites and this forum.

Everyone seems so helpful, I can see Sydney being one of a few as the years go on.

Congrats on Sydney,he's lovely.
I've got a 1 year old corn thats done 2 mini strikes since I got him in August and has a really chilled out approach to the whole feeding thing.

After one of those days were i have just felt knackered, can't be bothered to do anything but then feel annoyed cos theres lots get done. I am very happy to remember that i can get Sydney out for a bit tonight after his 48hr rest to digest his feed! Looking forward to getting the kids to bed then getting the little one out.

A lot of cornsnakes wont strike when they eat.
It's usually the younger ones that wont, because they simply don't need to go to the effort of contricting and 'killing' prey that cannot harm them.
Quite often it's not until they get onto larger mice that they do it. Even then, some don't do it.

It makes no odds if they do or not, in some ways it's better that they don't as it's easier to remove them if they every decide your hand is prey.

Welcome to the world of snakes! I've had my first snake for 6 weeks now and am picking my second up on sunday :o) and i am hoping there will be a 3rd for my birthday in a couple of weeks (I have made more than enough hints to the other half!). enjoy sydney, he/she is a real cutie.

Does any experienced corn owners know if this is normal or not? Why are our corns not striking when they eat?
pickle007 Posted - 07/07/2011 : 21:06:06
hi yea we are first time snake owners, ours is the same as yours he doesent snack and grab we have to put the food on the floor for him then he will eat it, but if i try to move it he still do not snack and grab i dont know if that is a good thing or not?

Looks good.
In my opinion it's hard to overcrowd a faun or a viv.
west5680 Posted - 07/07/2011 : 17:34:11
Thanks guys, cheers for doing that Kehhlyr i couldn't wor out how.

I have been and bought an extra hide today and different water bowl, would you say that the faunarium is too crowded now?

Looks good.
I have edited to make them side by side to stay within the constraints of sig sizes.

Hi
Welcome to the forum. What a super wedding pressie!
Don't worry too much about the wee mistake of handling after food this time, just remember to allow 48 hours in future. It's to give the meal time to digest properly and help avoid a regurge which isn't good for the snake. We all make mistakes but the important thing is to learn from them.
I have a feeling one snake will not be enough for you........
