Hi I'm very new at this I've been scared off snakes all my life and my daughter has been pestering me for ages to get baby corn I have a friend who has seven snakes so I went to see him before deciding what to do he has two boas 3corn a royal python and another python think it may be called a rock python not sure so my daughter was with me and he had then all out holding them and putting one round my neck I thought I was going to take a heart attack and die.after ten min I calmed down and realised I had nothing to fear so we now have a baby corn .we have noticed that he sits in his water bowl sometimes is he about to shed or is it to hot in viv hot end is between 27.5 and28.5 eats well gets pinky every 4 days

Hi
Welcome o the forum.
It's up to you if you feed or not. Some snakes will still eat if they're in shed or not. You could offer food and see if he eats it. If he won't don't worry just leave him alone until he's shed then feed him his next due feed as normal. You'll soon learn how you snake reacts to shedding.

If it does turn out to be mites, there is are a few sticky posts in the health section about different treatments
Gash Posted - 20/08/2011 : 14:42:13
Haven't seen any specks in water or on snakes is that the sign off mites and if it is what do you do...

Hiya and welcome to the forum. Congratulations on getting your little snake. I'm guessing I don't need to warn you how addictive they are since you are already planning your next.

It sounds like you are doing really well at providing him with the correct environment. Just want to double check where you have the thermostat and thermometer probes located. What kind of thermometer are you using?

Also, have you noticed any black specs either on the snake or floating in his water bowl after he has been in it. Another reason for them bathing so much could be the presence of mites.

Other than that I guess he just likes to have a bath lol

Congratulations and welcome :-) Sounds like you doing a good job. Might be worth getting a second thermometer, or moving your current one to the cool end for a day to get a reading, but it does just sound like you have yourself a swimmer :-)

Thanks tordyjo think I will have a few stupid questions over the coming weeks don't think my daughter to happy think he is mine see how things work out only had him few weeks and I'm thinking of getting another one better keep that thought to myself for now lol
tordyjo Posted - 20/08/2011 : 11:40:26
kitchen roll is great when they're so small, its cheap and easy to change when they poop, they can hide underneath it, which is fine, pleased he's calm and gentle for you, i never get tired of watching them
Gash Posted - 20/08/2011 : 11:35:21
Eyes and skin look ok as I said earlier friend has 7 snakes and one off his had blue eyes and he told me it was about to shed I will put in empty toilet roll holder I'm only putting kitchen roll in base of faun is this ok also he goes under it to hide he's so gentle hope he stays like that lol
tordyjo Posted - 20/08/2011 : 11:25:43
setup sounds fine, have you noticed any other signs he's coming up to a shed, does his colours look a bit duller, do his eyes look blue, is he hiding away more, have you got hides for him in both cool and warm end, you can use the greenery as a hide or toilet tubes, they prefer smaller spaces as they feel more secure

oh and well done in getting over your fear of snakes
Gash Posted - 20/08/2011 : 11:06:19
Yes the stats at 28 and the thermometer jumps around between 27 and 28 only have thermometer at hot end I no the faun should be length and width should be size off snake so he got enough room but with water bowl and bit off greenery it looks small
tordyjo Posted - 20/08/2011 : 10:53:38
welcome,

there are various reasons why they sit in their water bowl, one of them is when they're coming up to shedding. Do you have a thermometer to measure the temperatures and a stat to control the heatmat? The temps you've posted seem ok. Oh and we need some pics once he's settled in, always love a good nose at other peoples corns, lol
