Hi all

Well what an interesting couple of months I have had. Been reading tons on Corn Snakes - lurked on this site for a long while, reading posts, questions etc - in order to prepare and be a responsible keeper.

Had my Viv set up for 3 days before bringing little one home as I wanted to check temperatures were stable before adding her. (I say her, but have no idea what sex it is really - and dont intend finsing out for myself)!!

Anyway, Chumana came home yesterday morning, and no amount of reading up, preparation etc can exactly prepare you for owning your first snake. I am filled with excitement, happiness but also worry.

Our first meeting alone wasnt the best. Whilst transferring from her box into Viv she managed to wee and poop and seemed rather stressed. NOT the first experience I was hoping to achieve.

Shes been home for more than 24 hours now - her Viv is in an area of little traffic (although with only me living here, theres only so much traffic around anyway haha).

I have two hides for her at each end - but she has so far stayed in the cool end. To my knowledge she hasnt ventured out from there as yet. She has poked her head out a few times, but is still in hiding.

She was fed last Monday, and has had no shedding or feeding issues.

I just want to make sure I give Chumana the best starts with me. She was very alert, inquisitive and speedy in the pet shop.

I intended just leaving her be to get accustomed to the viv, to the new sights, vibrations and smells and taking it from there.

So here begins what I hope will be a long and happy relationship between me and the little one. Sure I will have SO many questions along the way, but it is nice to now be joining you all and not just reading on the outskirts.

Tam

Hi everyone,

Thankyou so much for all your kind words and advice. Chumana has settled in lovely - shes a real little character and a pleasure to own.

She is happy exploring her environment, seems to like it, and is very curious as to what I am doing - coming over to have a closer look!!

I handled her last night and she was calm, and relaxed, flicking her tongue and getting used to me. I tried to put her back after 5 minutes and she wouldnt go back in, so kept her out another 5 and she loved it.

I fed her this morning and she ate no problems and seems like a really contented little corn snake at the minute. She seems to prefer the cold end of the Viv - but thats entirely up to her, and if shes happy then so am I.

Thankyou so much for your help so far and in helping me settle Chumana into my home!!!

Oh sorry I have another question - where's best place to put the sock if she's staying in her shell and just popping a head out when I am around? Do I put it warm or cool end etc etc?

Hehe only just spotted my typo - you will all be relieved to hear her head is not blue, but is a blur haha!

Hadn't thought bout sock - I did read about putting item of clothing in with her, but thought size of her compared with me she would be lost. Will do sock thing today.

Around 6ish last night she did start to come out. VERY slowly. Had about an inch of her head stuck straight out for about 30 minutes. She did come out further, but I forgot and stood up. When I realised she had gone back into hide. But she did pop her head back out soon after. So its progress. And I am happy to go by her time and have her happy!

Its so nice to have this forum as well. With people who understand my love haha. Not sure my friend enjoys the text updates much haha

Looking forward to getting to know you and your friends in time. Thanks again for the welcome.

Hi and welcome. I brt little Chumana has been out probably during the dead of the night while you were sleeping, i tend to catch mine exploring when i come in from a late shift and turn the lights on, they look at me all shocked then slowly retreat back into their hide.

Hi and welcome. It sounds like you have done lots of research which is great. I don't think it matters how much we read we will still always worry we are doing the right thing. It shows we care about our pets welfare so is a good thing.

Hi Tam, welcome to the forum.

Ahhh, you make me giggle Baldy

Hey Tam, welcome to the forum - it sounds like your doing a great job, i guess it may be a slightly more stressful than usual time for Chumana (both moving house and going into blue), but it sounds like you have it all sorted

Hey thanks for the welcome. I forgot to say Chumana is 2 months old, and a Dark chocolate & orange colour. Took a very brief pic yesterday, but her head is a blue, and now she's in hiding you cant see her colours hehe

I was just wondering if there was anything specific you would recommend I do to make this time less stressful for her?

*UPDATE* she seems to like Adele's 'Someone Like You' haha - random lil chickadee
