We bought our first snake yesterday. It's a Carolina Corn and he's all set up in his new home now.

We bought him from Ameyzoo in Bovingdon, Herts. Anyone heard of or know Mark Amey who owns it? He does a lot of TV work handling exotic animals and certainly seemed to know what he was talking about!

The snake is only 2 months old and was bred by and has a complete feeding history with the shop. We have been supplied with a starter kit which comprises of the correct size vivarium, low wattage heat mat, hide, aspen, water bowl, feeding tongs, reptile friendly anti bacterial wipes and our first batch of pinkeys! I had a slight concern about not being supplied with a thermostat after reading a number of posts on here, however after emailing our supplier he said the heat mat should be fine as it is a low wattage and we have been informed of when to turn it off also.

Is there anything else we may need or anyone may want to recommend?

He (Pablo ) is settling in nicely and seems to be exploring ways to escape without success at the moment! He is spending a lot of time burrowed in the aspen shavings too. I assume this is normal behaviour when adapting to his new surroundings.

We look forward to seeing him grow up and can't wait to start handling him once he's settled in comfortably.

Huffy most ppl attach the thermometer probe to the stat probe to get an accurate reading as for the cool end mines just above the base of the viv in the corner its nromally between 21-24 during the day

We were given one strip thermometer and have it stuck in the middle of the tank, although since joining the forum I've seen people suggesting 2 - one at the hot and one at the cold end. Any tips on where to position them?

Hi and welcome. Congrats on your new addition. I echo all the above comments on the use of a thermostat. I also question the need to ever turn the heatmat off. The thermostat will do that for you when the temperatures on the heatmat reach the temperature set.
You don't mention a thermometer with your set up. Did it include one and was it dial, strip or digital one? The most accurate one is the digital probe thermometer and the most reliable

Thanks for the warm welcome!

Thanks for the advice, it looks like a good idea to buy a thermostat then! After all it will be a forever purchase and can be used when Pablo needs a bigger vivarium and bigger heat mat.

I'll try and get some pics but he seems to be hiding in the aspen a lot at the moment! He must be shy while he's getting used to us!

In reply to your question garrie, we were only told to turn the heatmat off if it were blistering hot outside in the morning, which i know is probably not going to be the case in this country! So we will have ours on 24/7 i expect.

meant to add without a stat my 7 watt heat mat was reaching temperatures of over 50! so a stats a must really its shokcing the amount of reptile shops that tell people they are unessacery

Congrats we want piccys lol ignore the rubbish advice you will need a thermostat its not really an optional extra lol better to spend a lil more money now than risk burning your snake
welcome to the forum :-)

Hey James, welcome to the forum and congratulations on getting your first snake - i can't help but question the "and we have been informed of when to turn it off also" comment you made - corns should ideally always have access to a "warm end". Could you elaborate on this for us a little?

Hello and welcome. I would recommend a stat anyway... low wattage mats may have the slight hance of heating up too much for your snake (I have one and it does exceed 30*, the shop told me it wouldnt) and so its not really worth the risk of any cchance of burns. xxx
