HI, JUST LIKE TO INTRODUCE MYSELF AND ASK A QUESTION.
THIS IS MY FIRST SNAKE AND IM ON A STEEP LEARNING CURVE AT THE MOMENT.
I HAVE AN OKEETEE CORN I THINK, ABOUT A YEAR OLD AND ABOUT 3FT LONG. IVE HAD HER ABOUT 5 MONTHS. FEEDS WELL AND SHEDS WELL.
HER NAME IS BOB (SHORT FOR KATE) FROM BLACKADDER, IF ANYONES OLD ENOUGH TO REMEMBER....
IVE JUST MOVED HER INTO A NEW 3FT VIV, WOOD CHIP SUBSTRATE 11 INCH HEATMAT WITH BARK HIDES BOTH ENDS, IVE ALSO GOT A HEAT LAMP INSTALLED AS WELL ON DIMMER THERMOSTAT, BUT NOT USING THAT AT THE MOMENT. PROBLEM I HAVE IS SETTING THE TEMPERATURE AT THE WARM END. IF I GET THE TEMP RIGHT ON THE HEATMAT,(thermostat attached to heatmat outside of hide) THE TEMP UNDER THE HIDE IS CONSIDERABLY WARMER. eg WARM END SUBSTRATE MEASURED AT 78deg BUT UNDER HIDE IS 87deg, WHICH ONE SHOULD I TRY TO MAINTAIN AND SHOULD I USE THE LAMP THROUGH THE WINTER, AS IM SHIFT WORK AND DONT ALWAYS HAVE THE CENTRAL HEATING ON. THANKS IN ADVANCE...

hi and welcome, your snake will spend most of its time in the hide so is best to maintain the temps in the hide at 29 ish. As for the lamp you dont need it in the winter your mat will be good enough to maintain the heat as a contact heater it will keep the temps the stat is set to.
