This is my first snake. I also have a beared dragon. I bought him a week ago, got his tank ready and put him in. The next day I tried to pick him up and he struck at my hand, which made me jump. He then started zooming around his tank, later on I noticed he had regurged his food that he had in the shop when I bought him. I read this was him stressing out.

Now I have moved his tank to a quieter part of the room as I have 3 boys. I fed him 2 days after that and he took it fine, and kept it down. In the last 3 days he is coming out of his hide into the other one, and also drinking from his bowl, he is just exploring aswell.

I dont want to try to pick him up and freak him out again. Should I leave it longer or suck it up and get my hand in there. Please help.

Should wait 10days from regurge date to feed again. Allows their stomach time to settle.

Hatchlings are notoriously jumpy Eves not quite 4 months but inside her rub she goes insane when u touch her lol she doesnt try to strike or anything its more like youve just zapped her with energy and she bolts around lol as soon as you actually get her out shes as placid as a lamb so my best advice take on board all of the above and just persevere shes a lot more scared of you than you are of her (might be a cliche but its true lol)

Thanks for your replies. My mat has a stat, the temp at the warm end is around 75 and around 65 at the cool end. I have a 17x11x6 high tank with a hide at the warm end by the heat mat. and another at the cool end. my youngest calls it lizzie (i dont know if its a boy/girl). lizzie is 4 months old. The reason i tried to handle her is because she came straight to me in the shop, and i was a bit excited. And i feel terrible for scaring her. I will definately try the sock idea, as i really want to handle her. It has been 3 days since she took a feed. Should i wait 7 days from today to handle her? and should i feed her as normal inbetween? (in the shop he said every 4/5 days)

Ideally you should have left the Snake to settle into its new surroundings for 7 days before you handled it. How long before it fed did the shop give you the snake? It also shouldnt be handled for 48hrs after eating a meal.

Best advise to do now is leave it for 7 days, only going into the viv for water changes and spot cleaning (removing any poo). Then you can handle it. Then on the 10th day try feeding again.

Also might be worth carrying an old clean sock around with the for 24hr, then placing it in the viv. This will allow the snake to get used to you scent and not be threatend by it.

Out of interest how big is the viv you have it in? and what are the Temps etc like?

really should have left him for 7 days after Bringing home before trying to handle. Should really leave 10 days after a regurge before trying another feed to let their stomach settle and get back to normal but if its taken a feed and kept it down should be ok. Always leave 2 days after feeding before handling so they can digest their food. An idea of your set up (temps etc ) and age of snake will help. Youngsters will get snappy and defensive when sacred and stressed out. Make sure you have a cool hide and warm hide and please please make sure the heat mat is statted!
