Hi All,

My name is Jonny, and I live in N.Wales.

I have always wanted a pet snake since being a nipper, but only now (several years later) have I took the plunge.

We have kept tropical fish for donkeys years, but over the last 3 or 4 years we ran down from 5 tanks, and breeding etc to just one tank, and finally shut this tank down a few weeks ago.

My daughter and I were looking at the empty tank, and discussing what to do when she mentioned snakes, so we did some research, and converted the aquarium to a vivarium.

Finally we were ready and last weekend we brought Syd our corn snake.

Even though we had done our homework, and knew they were escape artists I over looked a hole in the hood (which used to house the electrics for the lights) so when we got up the next morning she was missing. A few hours later she turned up again, and a simple modification later she is safe and sound.

She is gorgeous, so glad you found her, check for other escape holes!

As soon as she was noticed missing I modified the hood, and then as belt and braces measure I added a layer of 2mm mesh (plant shade matting from a local garden centre) between the tank and the hood. 10 days on and we have not had a repeat so I'm hoping she is secure.

When we did our homework we had read numerous times they are escape artists, and we thought we had covered all bases... we were wrong..lol

Its posts like this that can help show new people just how easy they really can escape, so with luck, might prevent other escapes

Hi to u guys too, and thanks again.

Well i am not yet a fortnight into my snake keeping career, and it has been action packed to say the least.

On the first night snakey went missing, escaping through a small hole I had not spotted in hood of viv, she was found again at 6pm the next day, none the worse for her ordeal.

Then on Thursday we had our first feed, which went smoothly, although I got to say I must have the most laid back snake in the world, she meandered her way over, and just swallowed it down, without and striking or constricting her tea. Still after about 5 or 6 mins micey was gone.

Then on Sunday my Mrs rang me in work to say she had noticed her eyes were a funny colour. I came home from work on Monday and thought she must be in Blue. On Tuesday her eyes had cleared, and today at around teatime she had shed her skin, a pretty much perfect shed, missed by us all as we had nipped out to the supermarket!! (she had also done an enormous poop which I understand is to be expected).

Syd in post shed shininess

So That's the roller coaster ride I have been on to date, luckily Syd is sooooo laid back and seems to take it all without any stress.

The numbers indicate the number of which sex you have so 1.0.0 = 1 male 1.1.0 would = 1 male 1 female 1.1.1 would be 1 male 1 female 1 unsexed

Hello and welcome. We have 5 fish tanks and 3 vivs! Just upgrading my vivs to bigger ones, so I will have some empty soon. Wonder what I could put in them :)

Good luck with your snakey. A stunner :)

What a lovely snake! Definitely looks like a motley of some kind (could possibly be a bloodred motley, you need to ask Eeji that one lol!)
