Posted - 10/09/2012 : 00:04:54 I'm getting a house snake in a couple of months and am starting to think about getting his equipment sorted out.
I was looking for some suggestions from anyone who has experience keeping male house snakes as hatchlings, mainly regarding hide size. I don't want to provide anything too spacious because as far as I understand male house snakes are extremely small as hatchlings. Would the small exo-terra hide, for example, be too roomy? Is there anything else I could consider using as a hide, perhaps from around the house?
I'm prepared to wait until he's grown and occupying a proper viv before splashing out on expensive viv decorations but on the other hand don't want to give him an inferior home while he's in a RUB.
Pics of set ups would be fantastic, as would any suggestions you may have |

Posted - 23/09/2012 : 20:21:44 I have a plan... Corno has moved into a 4ft viv, so there is room for 2 2ft vivs on top... 2ft is definitely big enough for a male adult housie right? And for a male adult hognose? You can see my plan... |

Nice looking RUBS Mort
We bathed Ruby today as she's still got a bit of shed left on, we looked at each other in horror when she dived completely under and stayed there (very shallow water), had no idea they could do that every day something new to learn! |

Posted - 23/09/2012 : 16:04:51 I used a locking lid lunch tupperware lunchbox type thing too for my hatchie housie. They are TINY, Hal was 9 grams when I first got him and he was a month old. He now lives in a 4 Litre RUB with an adapted lid to close the gaps over. I cant wait for him to grow a little bit and move into his vivarium but he is growing quite slowly, think he is always going to be a midget. Definitely a great snake to have though, all the attitude of a retic in the body of a earth worm. |

Others may disagree, of course... |

Posted - 10/09/2012 : 21:17:27 Umm,he kept knocking his smaller bowl so I put this one in and was worried he'd get in and not be able to get back out so put the pebbles in to make it shallower....told you I'm paranoid lol! They were removed a few months back though |

Myself I'd say the small exo terra hides are too big. I didn't provide my male Cape with one of them till he was over 1 year old. He's still happy in there now. Toilet rolls cute in half length ways are good. I bought a pack of plastic kids cups from Asda and cut an arch way into them for my Capes. Ollivander has a hide made from a dessert I had,he loves it due to being black and is just growing out of it now at a year old.
Elis (Cape housie) home as a hatchling. Its one of the clip seal boxes. The blue thing is the hide made from one of the cups

Ollivanders (True Olive) home. He's just ready to go into a larger tub now but this has been perfect. Small black hide from a dessert and a teeny weeny RUB for a moist hide lol.
