So I just acquired a tank that I'm now using to house my corn snake instead of the mesh thing I used to have before. What do you recommend as a MUST HAVE for it? I have some wood and fake foliage in there already and a water bowl. I have the lamp thing that gives off heat and then I have the Exoterra Bulb thing. I used to have a heat rock which I was recommended to take out because it wasn't good for my snake, so it's no longer in there. I have 1 hide and just a bunch of branches/wood. I have nothing on the bottom of the tank either or around the walls. Would you recommend something? I'm still a little new to this and from what I've read and learned off some of you I wasn't really well informed. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you all of those who do reply.

I'm not sure actually but when I got it I was told she was a year old so she's about to be 2?
viraleye Posted - 10/06/2012 : 07:54:39
What age is your snake?
UniqueGlow Posted - 10/06/2012 : 02:33:47
Yeah I plan on getting aspen soon or wood chips. As far as the tank I got it for free and its a work in progress and I think its a definite upgrade from where I used to have my snake before. She can now stretch out before she wouldn't really be able to do much.

Not being funny, but that doesn't look like the most secure of tanks.

I just use kitchen roll as substrate at the moment. tis certainly cheap! am thinking of swapping to aspen though. didnt realise you could use beech though
marc_sg Posted - 09/06/2012 : 15:54:15
Yeah i use aspen wood chips you can use a few things but not pine chipping or cedar wood chippings
Sleeper341 Posted - 09/06/2012 : 12:48:37
do you need some kind of substrate on the floor?
UniqueGlow Posted - 09/06/2012 : 07:19:39
Okay I'll try the head splitting thing. Hmm never heard of that. Also on a side note I hope she eats soon cuz its been like 2 months. O_o

Here is a picture of my new setup so far. It's still a work in progress. I'm trying to make it better for her.

Let me know what you think. This is still all a bit new to me, but I'm trying to learn more. =D

Leave it more than a week this time leave it for two. And where u have defrosted the mouse split the head and expose the brain.this will make it smell more
UniqueGlow Posted - 09/06/2012 : 01:01:00
Okay that's what I thought. My snake still isn't eating. I hope she eats soon. I've been trying once a week for a while now but nothing. Any suggestions?

Toilet roll holders huh? Hmmm interesting. LOL

in a seperate container is better if you can. stops them associating your hand coming into the viv as food and alslo cuts out the risk of substrate being eaten with the mouse
UniqueGlow Posted - 07/06/2012 : 03:52:10
WOW! Thanks for all that info guys! =D You guys are the best! I'll see what works for me. I do have one question about feeding. Do you recommend feeding where they live or in a separate container?
eeji Posted - 06/06/2012 : 20:44:26
I've never seen cedar, but pine is easily available usually for little fluffy bunnys etc (that bizarrely are also affected by the phenols!)
QueenVic Posted - 06/06/2012 : 12:26:13
I didn't realise you could buy pine or cedar chips... Ive always just stuck with beech chip though, tried aspen once but switched straight back just cause i prefer how chippings look.
eeji Posted - 06/06/2012 : 12:12:22
a lot of people have mentioned wood chippings, but nobody has yet said to avoid pine or cedar chips because they contain toxic phenols. The most popular stuff over here in the UK are aspen, beech and (untreated) hemp core so I would imagine you will be able to find the same sort of stuff in the US
QueenVic Posted - 06/06/2012 : 12:07:23
i think marc meant heat mat lol.
And i use wood chippings in both my vivs. its pretty cheap for a big bag, think aspen may be cheaper though.
But for cleaning out you can just spot clean the poo seen as they dont go too much lol, and then every now and then do a full substrate change and clean the viv out.
Some people do just use newspaper, and ive heard of people using fitted pieces of carpet that they wash or replace when the snakes messes on it lol.

There are loads of things you can do, as long as you get the basics for the snakes needs, you can use just about anything you want in the viv lol

That's awesome!!!! I want a skull!!!!!!!!

To everyone else thanks for all the advice. I will post a pic ASAP. Also is it hard cleaning when you use the wood chippings/aspen and is it expensive? I will add another hide though. I only have one. As far as the heat lamps one is the bulb one (100w) and the other one is just one that lets out heat but isn't actually a bulb. It's not that strong though it's barely warm to me even when my hand is right under it. By the way, Marc_sg what is a heat nst? I do want to get a thermostat. Oh and lastly whats a glass viv?
