Posted - 12/11/2013 : 09:59:49 If you cut him in half would he be loaf-shaped, circular or triangular Danny? The first is what you want. If he is circular then he is overweight and I very much doubt he is triangular because that would mean he was skinny ! It may be worth reading the thread on 'Is your snake a fatty?' - http://www.thecornsnake.co.uk/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=11891
I'm not saying he is, but worth a look.

Posted - 10/11/2013 : 18:14:23 Thanks kellog and you are totally right, he just has no interest in mice so I don't even bother now, I was surprised he was ok with chicks but he loves em! |

Posted - 10/11/2013 : 08:28:56 I've heard that it's sometimes hard to get corns back onto mice once they've been on rats Lee. I'm glad you've worked out a good feeding schedule that is healthier for him. He's lucky he's got an owner who cares enough to go to that trouble .

Posted - 09/11/2013 : 22:05:42 My 5ft male has a weaner rat, then two weeks later a chick then two weeks later a weaner again, he was overfed before I got him so I've been slimming him down. He won't eat mice, so they are not an option. He loves the chicks and they seem to agree with him as he's in great condition now, lovely sheen. |

Posted - 08/11/2013 : 10:52:05 What's been said is right Danny. An adult corn doesn't need to be fed much as it isn't growing, so it only needs enough to maintain it. You can feed your snake on rats as long as you take into account the nutritional difference, which would mean feeding it at least every 2 weeks if not more. The majority of adult corns are fed on one large mouse every 10/14 days. Weight can go on very easily with them but is then hard to shift, so it's a good idea to keep a record of it.
Hope that helps.

Posted - 07/11/2013 : 12:06:15 Definitely no more - generally it's advised to feed adult corns on large mice (or ex-breeders if they are especially large corns) every 2 weeks. Rat weaners are fine for snakes which will end up on adult rats, but not ideal for corns all the time as they will have a higher fat content and lower calcium content than an adult mouse. Fine now and again, just not constantly (but having said that you may not be able to get your corn off them if that's what they have a taste for!).
A lot of corns get overweight in captivity - the body should be loaf-shaped, not look too round, and there shouldn't be too obvious a start to the tail as this shows they are a bit overweight. |

Posted - 07/11/2013 : 00:28:57 My big male is fed an alternating diet of 1 large mouse or 1 chick, every 10 days. I give chicks because they're supposed to be lower in fat than mice and he's on a diet. When I got him he was over 1kg, massive for a 4.5 foot corn. He's around 850g now, which is more acceptable but he's still quite chunky and needs to slim down a tad more. My female is on 1 large mouse every 7 days with the occasional chick as a treat, she's around 450g; she lost a lot of weight after her eggs and hasn't quite put it back on yet.
Individual snakes have their own requirements. It's a good idea to keep a record of weight, as long as they maintain a healthy weight I'm sure rats are fine. How often do you feed? Snakes are opportunistic feeders and will pretty much always be on the lookout for more even if they don't need it. |
