Got Alice the other day and the guy in the shop gave me "everything i needed" to set him up... Reading through all the posts i think im going to be in trouble with all of you! The guy gave me a faun, water bowl, hide, bedding, pinkies and a heat mat... but thats it. He didnt mention anything about a thermostat and stuff like that... So now im worried :(

If i do need to get anything else can you let me know and ill order them ASAP.

In the meantime... Will Alice be ok??

Tash

i also noticed you say 'a hide' - if you only got one hide then you will need at least one more so your snake can chosse whether to hide in the cool end of the faunarium or the warm end. The more hiding places there are, the happier your snake will be.
I use empty toilet roll tubes cut in half lengthways for hatchling hides and just replace them when necessary.

I think most starter sets are sold without really essential kit. I don't know if its to keep the price down to increase sales or just incompetence. A couple of digital thermometers and a thermostat is so essential to a snake owner but yet I've not heard of any that provide these, its annoying because I wouldn't have minded paying the extra to get everything first time round. Don't worry about it though most of us have bought starter kits (me included) and had to then go and buy the rest of the kit.

I don't think any pet shop tells people they need a stat, which baffles me.
I didn't get told either but I insisted on getting one after my heat mat melted through my plastic faun thing...so there you go, stats are needed :)
I'm glad you've decided to listen to us rather than the pet shop :D haha

Yea its really wierd... I called my boyfriend as he was the one that picked Alice up and they said thats all we need :S Anyway everything has been ordered now and i couldnt resist getting some more accessories for him too :)

I had the same with a shop i got my hatchies from. They insisted no thermostat was needed even said they don't use any on their mats. I don't understand it shops have the stats there to sell but seem reluctant to sell them! Weird.

Aww, bless you, nobody will tell you off! We know what these shops are like....anything for a sale. At least you've come on here to ask for help. Have a look at the sticky on how to set up for a hatchling 101. I don't know how to do a link but you could look in the search or maybe a really kind, and clever, person will link it for you! You could also have a look on the caresheet via the homepage, it's full of great information.
I'm sure Alice will be ok until you get the necessary bits you need.

If thats the one ill order it now!! Will there be instructions of how to use it? (im rubbish with things like this)
Thanks for the help... Is there anything else i will need?

Tash :)

if it's a little 7W mat in the 'starter kit' they can be quite ferocious and temps can get to fatal levels......i'd just put a very small section of mat under the faun personally till you get a stat sorted

you only need a basic on/off type stat like a 'ministat' or 'matstat' which should be less than £25-30 brand new and worth every penny

congrats on your purchase too
