Posted - 19/11/2010 : 13:14:22 Hi, I'm sure this has been asked before, we currently have 2 x corns (1 Butter & 1 Cali) wev'e had them for about 2 & 3 years resepctively. My wife has just found out that she's pregnant and as we are always careful about hygeine etc, however we are debating as to whether or not its advisable to keep them due to any risk to her or the baby? Iv'e trawled the net and can't find anything constructive? Any advice would be greatly appreciated |

Posted - 21/11/2010 : 09:52:45 lol Stapey, snakes carry salmonella on their scales most of the time, and they also carry pseudamonas in their saliva, but other than that, we didnt find anything else of any concern. ( we got swabs from the snakes all over and tested them) the levels of salmonella were very low anyway, as was the pseudamonas.
As above, alcohol gel, plenty of hand washing, no sucking on snakes (no pun intended)!!! |

Posted - 20/11/2010 : 12:52:05 I'm 23 weeks pregnant and have got 2 corns, and have had no problems. There is a risk as snakes can carry salmonella I believe(apologies if this is wrong!)but as long as you keep up good hand hygiene before and after handling (same as if she was handling raw poultry lol) then your wife and baby should be fine I handle my 2 regularly and have had no probs |

Posted - 19/11/2010 : 22:25:38 Well if worst comes to worst and you need to get rid of them until you have your baby do you have any friends who would watch them for that time and after the birth you can have them back |

Posted - 19/11/2010 : 15:46:40 Cats are also scary with newborns - they get jealous, and can scratch out, or see the new child and their crib as a good place for sitting and sleeping, and there have been reports of them suffocating children x.x
Snakes shouldn't be too much of a worry. I recently had a friend get pregnant, and she had three terrapins which supposedly are really bad health wise for new mothers, pregnant women and newborns. Iunno why, as they didn't seem too sure themselves, but they wanted to get rid of them. I've never really heard that much issue snake wise, bar the costs of running their heating and the like. |

Posted - 19/11/2010 : 14:47:33 I think its cats that are the concern pet wise while pregnant due to toxoplasmosis. As you say you're careful in regards to hygeine you'll be fine with your snakes. Congratulations by the way |

Posted - 19/11/2010 : 14:09:13 my wife is currently pregnant with our second - due feb 22nd. she handles my snake just fine (no pun intended ). we always use anti bacterial handwash after handling. its probably more dangerous to stroke our dog as he goes outside - eats and walks in god knows what! also my 19 month old son is pretty hands on with both our snake and dog - supervised ofcourse and we antibac his hands after snake handling too.

Posted - 19/11/2010 : 13:35:55 We've had this question before and the general guidance seemes to be that as long as you carry on with good hygenic practice then she should be fine. There are no more germs transmitted by snakes than by the chicken that we have for a Sunday roast! |
