Hi I recently purchased a corn snake and I have heard so many things about heat for them. I am wanting to know if they require a heat mat or a heat source from a bulb. I have been told a heat mat is fine, or just a light bulb is fine. Do they need both or is one better that the other? Thanks for your help. by the way nice to meet you guys !!!!

I use a bulb (60w red) just because that's what my vivs came with. Never had any problems. Like everyone said just make sure you stat and guard them.
I also figure that the sun shines from above to warm the ground so it shouldn't matter if it's a bulb or a mat!

I have a little bit of experience with both. I started off with a lamp but to keep a day/night cycle it had to be off over night and the temperatures were falling to room temperature. It did my snake no harm but I could see him waiting at the entrance of his hide until the light went off. So I bought a heat mat, and Spot is much happier now, he comes out a lot more and for longer as he has a source of heat 24/7 now. The important things to consider is a heat mat will need a mat-stat or equivalent, they are about £25. A bulb will need a guard (£20 approx) and a dimming thermostat (£45 approx).

I take it you have a heat source now?

And guarded if it's a lamp.

corns dont need both heat sources, but it is entirely your choice which one you go with as light or mat are both fine for corns.

So long as the source is statted.

Hello and welcome to the forum , For a cornsnake a heat mat is better and cheaper to run as well if your going for something more heavyer bodied then a light will be needed but has cornsnakes take heat in from there belly the matt is ideal for it. Hope this helps you.
