I just went to pick up Fudge(6month old) and he rattled his tail at me. How long do i wait until trying to handle him again? and what do i do if i do happen to get bit by him? |

Yep, that was my experience. He was a yearling at the time and hung on chewing on my hand for a while but it didn't hurt at all. I just supported his body and held him gently behind the neck ready to move him away as soon as he decided to open his mouth. Mainly I was running away from my husband who was attempting to leap to my defence and pull him off with me crying, 'No leave him alone, you'll damage his teeth!' If I didn't feel a good chewing which did break the skin then I doubt you'd feel a defensive nip at all. Just move gently but firmly and pick him up when you want to, don't let him dictate to you . |

If your snake bites you while being handled don't put it back in its viv or rub as then the snake every time he bites and you put him away "freedom to the snake and will keep doing to you". So don't let him put you off handling when you get bit then the snake will get used to you handling and won't bite as will tame up. |

A lot of young snakes can be a bit nippy but they tend to settle down once they know you're not a threat. It's quite cute that they make such a big show but if they do bite you hardly know it's happened! Bless them...  |

You should really leave your snake alone for a week to get used to his new surroundings and then try to handle him after that. If you keep handling him after bringing him home without giving him time to settle he may get stressed... After the week you should slowly get him used to you, so on the 1st day put your hand in the faun/viv and just let him explore it, and eventually try and pick him up. |

I got Humbug at the Doncaster Show at the end of September. She was only a couple of months old and bit me at the show the first time that I picked her up. Then every time I went to pick her up to feed her (in her RUB) she would strike at me and bite me. When I put her in the RUB she would rattle her tail against the RUB and I thought that I had bought a rattle snake and not a cornsnake. This behaviour lasted for about 6 weeks but once she realised that I wasn't a threat she has stopped this behaviour. |

Dont show your fear and dont give up, otherwise he will think him rattling his tail has worked. Just go in to handle him normally like hes doing nothing and dont flinch if he bites, it dosent hurt it's like the smallest nip EVER, and keep doing this untill he realises that you arnt a threat.

I would just go in and pick him up when ever, and im guessing if he bites you, you'll probably say "ooo you little s***" Or atleast thats what i tend to say when one gets me. It dosn't hurt when there that size. |
