Hi guys,
So I've been on this site for about 6 months now, quietly collecting info that you guys and girls share so willingly and got myself all set up for my new snakey baby. I was originally planning to get a hatchie from a friend who incubated some eggs from her two but unfortunately the second baby (the one she wasn't keeping for herself) died. So after trying to come to terms with the fact that I wasn't going to get a snake I decided tht actually I now had to have one.
I set up my viv and got it all up to temp and yesterday went out to get one. I fell in love with a little amel and he came home with me and is currently in the viv settling in. However, he's a lot younger and smaller than I thought he was going to be and I'm concerned that the viv is too big for him. I have a faunarium (as I was originally planning on keeping the baby in there) and now i'm wondering should I put him in the faun instead of in the viv.
I can't actually tell you how old he is (couple of months at a guess) or how long he is because I didn't measure him before putting him in. The viv is about 2ft long and 1 wide. I'm worried because I actually haven't seen him since I put him in. He doesn't appear to be exploring or anything. I realise it's early days but I thought he'd want to have a look around.
Am I worrying prematurely or do you think I should pop him in the faunarium which is smaller? |

Well since I last posted I spoke to my friend who was giving me one of her babies and she suggested turning the lights off as her baby comes out more when the lights were off. So I turned off the lamp close to the viv and dimmed the living room lights and lo and behold out popped a little orange head! Since then he's been having a right old slither about and has come up to the glass and watched me very curiously. I've only had him a day and I LOVE him!!!!!  |

It was a few days before I saw Spot out of the hide, but it was obvious he was out and about when no one was in the living room and the lights were off, as he had moved things about, pulled over some of the foliage and made little dips in the substrate. I think it was day 3 when I was changing the water I realised I was been watched so I stopped still and he actually stuck his head out and flicked his tongue a few times and decided he wanted a closer look, came over and onto my hand.
As annoying as the 7 day settling in period is, these little snakes still have a way of giving us these little joyful moments and little clues to show what they are up to when noone is watching. |

Yeah it is about that size. I didn't think about it like. But feel much happier about having him in the viv now. I just want to see him come out and explore a bit! Haven't even given him a name yet! Feel like I need to see him in action so I can find something that fits.  |

If you have the large faunarium (as I do) it's 1.5ft by 1ft so not much difference in size really to your 2ft viv so I'm sure he will be fine with all the hiding places you have provided.
The next 7 days are a killer but you will soon be able to have a hold and get to know your new baby better.
Looking forward to some pics later. |

know what you mean! dont worry before you know it he'll be out and about (and up your sleeve, in your hair, in your hood and anywhere else he can go lol- just ask tiffany! haha!) |

Well that's kind of what I thought. That moving him would unsettle him again. There's loads of places to hide for him, I made sure of that. All sorts of small nooks and crannies for him to hide in. So hopefully he'll be ok. Just have to tell all the family members waiting for photos that they have to be as patient as me. I'm dying to hold him again (held him in the shop) but not for another 6 or 7 days! at least! It's torture! |

you could move him but as long as he has ample hiding space in the viv he'll be ok and moving him might just unsettle him again. Make sure he has several hides and that thay are small enough that he feels "cozy" inside. Not seeing him for a fair while is perfectly normal, if you keep an eye on him, particularly in the evenings and mornings, you should see him come out and explore in the next week or so. he's just getting used to his new home. dont handle him or disturb him, just change his water and clean him out as neccessary. Just give him hides, cover and above all time and privacy to settle in and you should be ok! :)
