Hi I am new to this site. And I was wandering if any of you would be able to give me some advice?
I got my Corn Snake in August last year and he is the first snake I have owned.
He has only had one perfect shed, and he has now got a permanent sweat box as he is just a bit rubbish at shedding. He last shed roughly two weeks ago. However, I have noticed that he seems to have a cloudy eye. It is not both, just the one. This concerns me slightly as he has not shed his skin off of the tip of his tail either. For this reason I am worried that he has been unable to remove the skin around his eye properly.
Having said that he is darting around his vivarium a bit and 'nose-butting' everything and anything. So maybe he is due to shed again?

the main thing to aid shedding is a damp hide when u see your snake go blue, your snake will spend most of its time in the damp hide if its due a shed |

I have managed to get the retained eye cap sorted out, I took him to a reptile keeper because the pillowcase method didn't work. (Though, I do think that was just because I was nervous). The tail tip has also come off. Thank you all so much for your advice, I shall definitely keep it all in mind in case I have any future problems with him. |

A little olive oil on the tail tip! works wonders. I tried the towel thing and it didnt work when my snake retained the tip of her tail! Combined with just a smear of olive oil though and i was able to get it off! |

Thank you so much for your advice, I really appreciate it :) I shall definitely give the pillowcase method a go. If that fails I shall take him to the reptile shop tomorrow after dropping my daughter to school. I shall let you know how I get on. Thank you again :) |

Deal with the problem first, he wont miss a feed as much as he will miss his vision or tail tip. Its unlikely to come to that but it is serious enough to need immediate attention. Run him through a damp towel or pillowcase for 20 minutes, using your hands to create tight points that he will have to push through (dont scrub at him, let him do all the work). If it doesn't shift it then seek professional help, either a specialist exotics vet or even your local reptile shop. Oh and there is no need for a permanent sweat box and as you can see hasn't worked anyway. It is almost 99.9% certainty that its a problem with your setup, which isn't a major issue just somethig to address. Its very likely to be humidity issue and I would personally reccommend getting a digital hygrometer to get an idea of what you are dealing with. I personally have one and I am able to regulate and adjust humidity as I see fit. I keep normal humidity at 40-50% and raise it to 60% with damp moss in a small snake cave from the point Spot's eyes clear up ready for sheddinguntil he has shed. Once he has shed I remove the moss and drop the humidity again as high humidity for long periods can cause respiratory infections (RI).

if he's still got old eye caps stuck and soaking doesn't help then I would get him to a vets to get them removed to prevent any lasting damage. If he usually eats well then a missed feed won't do any harm. |

I have just read them, sorry I was in bit of a panic last night. Thank you for your help. Is there any way that I can help to improve the shed? He does have a permanent sweat box so he does have an area of higher humidity. He is due a feed today as well, do you think it would be best to feed him and then deal with the eye cap and tail tip or to deal with the remainder of the shed first? |
