Hi guys
I've had my baby a week now and it's time to give him his first feed. Now the man in the shop said to feed him for the first couple of times in his viv with paper down but I had been planning to feed him in a tub. Do you think I should get him out and try to get him to strike in a tub or just put the pinkie in his viv and see if he'll eat it himself?
He hasn't eaten in over a week so I'm hoping he's nice and hungry and it wont matter what I do he'll eat it. |

I always use a separate feeding tub to feed in ,as I find my snakes automatically go in to feeding mode every time they go in it. It also prevents any chance of them going for you thinking it's time for a mouse. |

Ah thats fair enough. Medusa has only eaten off of her plastic lid once, every other time she strikes and constricts:) It's always good to see them do it for the first time! |

No he didn't strike because he's still quite timid and wont come out whilst I have the door open. Next week I'll try him in a tub and see if he'll strike. I want him to feed outside of his viv so that he doesn't associate me going into the viv with food and would be good to see him feeding more clearly.
Out of interest, do snakes see colours like we do or are they like dogs? |

Glad he fed for you. It's always good to get the first feed over. Now you will feel more confident about him feeding in future!  |

yeah, glad he fed, good work! dunno if it helps, but i use a brightly coloured tub in the help that helps them differentiate betwwn this and other areas...it might not actually help at all but i do it lol! just a thought... |

Well for the first time I decided to leave it in the viv with him on a bit of kitchen towel and he ate it perfectly! Just like a good little baby! I think next time I'm going to take him out and put him in a tub. Give him a little bit longer to settle in before moving him around. But I'm so glad he ate!!!  |

Try whichever method you think will suit your snake but it may not want to eat as it feels it hasn't 'settled' enough or could still be getting used to it's new surroundings. I feed mine in her viv with a plastic lid down over an area of the substrate in the same area every week so she knows where feeding time is. I usually hold the pinkie with the tongs and wiggle it about a bit and she usually strikes first time.
