Posted - 04/08/2011 : 09:11:54 Being new to all this I just wanted to check if this is right.I've set our Habistat mat stat at around 30c, the digital thermometer is reading 29.3c in the warm end. The last couple of days the heat mat has been turned off by the thermostat (turns off at 29.2c), and staying off most of the day/night. It is really warm here, so is that normal and alright for the heat mat to be off most of the time, or should I turn the mat stat up a bit higher to get the heat mat on? |

Posted - 04/08/2011 : 20:17:11 The cool end of my vivs has been 26c too. Unfortunately there is not alot I can do about it. Just don't do what I did last year. I decided to open my vivs about a cm and direct a fan there to try and get some cool air circulating. 2 days later I realised one of the snakes was missing. I found it later that day but that was the only time it could have escaped. Bear in mind my snake was an adult about 3cm across so I didn't really expect him to be able to get out. Now I know that any gap is a bad gap lol |

Posted - 04/08/2011 : 10:18:44 Agreed with the above, in this temperature the whole viv is probably at or about 29c. Mine is 28c in the cool end and 30c on the heat mat. Short of buying an air conditioner unit there's not much that can be done to create a temperature gradient in the viv. And the heat mat's job is basically to create that warm to cool gradient for the snake to use to regulate body temperature. My vivarium faces a window and so I put a sheet of card over the glass at the cool end which dropped the temperature to 26c. Not much of a difference but if you have any direct sun falling on your viv it might be worth thinking about shading the cool end? |

Posted - 04/08/2011 : 09:36:30 Mine dont come on much at the moment either because its been warmer. If the temp doesnt drop lower then the mat wont need to come on so will stay off. I wouldnt change anything as the stat is just doing its job. |

Posted - 04/08/2011 : 09:31:52 Due to the hot weather it won't need to turn on as much as it's probley at the right temp on the viv
I wouldn't turn it up
Your stat is doing the right thing |
