Wow!! That is a long time to go missing for!
When you say he won't let you near him,do you mean that you've caught him and have him contained and that he's striking at you? Or that you can't get near him to catch him?
If its the first then I'd get him straight to the vets. If its that he's striking at you when you go to catch him and you're worried about getting hurt,Id get something like a gardening glove on and just go for it before he disappears again. Sooner its done the better, for you and the snake.

Cant you not get near him as in, he keeps striking? Because if thats just the case, just go for it and grab him. The bites dont hurt, and it's worth a few tags to grab him back! If he keeps zooming away from you, the towel thing could work!
Good luck catching him!

Wow it has been missing for a long time. I'm not surprised he is aggressive if he has survived on his own for that long. Have you managed to capture him? If you get him, try and pop him into a storage tub with a couple of hides and some water and put one end near a radiator. Then I think a vets trip might be a good idea to check for any internal paracites, mites etc he could have picked up while living wild, and also to check his injuries. Then you need to decide if you want to keep him. If you do then you will need to get all the kit again pretty sharpish, then I would treat him as I would a new snake, leave him alone for a week, then give him a feed smaller than what you usually would, and then 48hrs after that you can start short handling sessions to get him used to you again. If you decide you don't want to keep him, you could take him to your local reptile shop and see if they will take him.

Agree with Hissyfit, try a towel. Or get him into a pillow case. Might calm him down. And also as simmy said take to vets. But, if he is healthy looking then he has lived with it for a while. My Corn has a twist in her neck, she copes with that fine.

Once caught i'd take him to a reptile vet if you say he has a squashed back...

Maybe try throwing a towel over him, might calm him enough for you to get hold of him? Or a large plastic container to put over him, slide a piece of cardboard under then you can turn it over and put a lid on it. Best of luck catching him, he's probably as scared as you are.

Have you got anything you can hold the snake in at all?! a RUB or anything?! How aggressive is it?

So he's been lost in your house for a year? Where have you found him? Can you easily get to him??
