Small question really.. My viv has just a heat mat under the substrate for warmth and even putting my hand inside it feels pretty chilly in there.. Is it worth changing my heat mat out to the side all or something or adding a heat lamp to keep it warmer in there? Btw a heads uP I've moved recently and I'm unsure where my thermometer has got to! But the mat is on a stat!

Agressive corns arent unheard of no. My adult carolina griffin was a rehome corn... he came to me very aggressive. It took time and patience when handling. Try the scent trick. Carry a sock with you for 24hrs and then pop it in the corns housing. This will help the corn to identify your scent as a good thing.

Hehe will give it time to settle down again changed temp upto 27.5 see how things go..
Georgina Posted - 08/02/2012 : 19:24:24
yeah they are a bit temperamental, mine took a few hours to settle down and ranges between 26.5 and 28. but my habistat ranges from 27.5 to 28.5. just click it up one degree at a time leaving an hour at a time until the ranges is averages between 27 and 28 but not going over 30. :)

My corn doesnt like it too hot, his hot end is at 26oC. The temp range is a guide but you make tweeks until it works for your snake and they thermoregulate correctly.

Those temps are a bit low, you want the warm side to be between 27 and 30.

Its unusual to have an aggressive corn snake but its not unheard of. Is there plenty of hiding places and fake foliage to keep hidden while moving around. I'm sure if you've had them ages you know to handle from the side and not from above and to scoop them up quickly and calmly with no hesitation. Other than that try putting a glove on so you dont react to been bitten and regularly handle for a few weeks, maybe 5 minutes a day and see if it calms down.

my second worry is my corn is very very aggressive, to the point going upto the glass window on the viv prompts it to get into a strike pose, you can garuntee a hand in the viv same end as the snake almost certainly ends with a bite! is this something I should be worried about I mean I even have alot of issues when trying to get it out the viv for cleaning or feeding! it just doesnt like it!

Nowt to worry about no. U would if your snake was regurging or having trouble shedding but if they're both ok then ok!!

I think our body temp is higher than a snake anyway so heat mat will feel not very warm to us.

When I've touched Cornelius's, it feels not very warm but temps are right & we've never had any probs with him, temp wise. Just put less substrate over heat mat.
Georgina Posted - 08/02/2012 : 14:51:45
It shouldn't be hot hot in there, the mat will not feel overly warm, the stat probe and thermometer probe should both be on the middle of the mat, held down but a hide or log, never tape or something sticky. I use a glue gun on mine, its easy to change when on their feed. Leave the therm on the mat for 10 mins and post the temp. Should be between 26 and 28 idealy.
