Hey guys and girls, I'm just curious to see what your experiences are of whether your snakes do thermo-regulate at free will, or do they just stay where they feel safest, temperature aside?

I'll give you two examples. Firstly my corn, Amber, Stays in the sock I've given her no matter where I move it. Cold side, warm side, in the middle, she always goes for it. She's got two other hides to choose from, and exo-terra small hide stuffed with shredded paper and an upturned chocolate box thingy. These hardly get any use at all. Even if I put her IN one, she'll have slinked off to the sock before you can say "cottonmouth".

The other example is my BRB Jade. Again, three hides, an exo terra large, a large hide very similar from SPS with a slightly wider entrance (she's getting chunky so I assume she'll need it sometime ) and all sorts of shrubbery and so on. She will ALWAYS go for the exo-terra, again no matter where I put it. Once a week or so ago (when it was -5 or so outside), it got to I think 15C on her cold side, and while it was a toasty 29C in her other hide, she refused to move, and when I got her out she was stone cold!

My question, surely if they wanted to warm up, they just move to a different hide? Maybe mine just aren't as clever as all of yours, I don't know, but both aren't aggressive, have been fairly comfortable, never regurged, etc etc.

What experiences do you guys have?

sharon the tiddler will be pretty much anywhere that she thinks she can't be seen, and doesn't seem to 'regulate' as such- sometimes i get her out and she's been in her warm bit so long she's toasty, and then other times she's been hanging about in the ivy and feels like an ice-brick- debbie definitely prefers her cardboard box thing- where-ever it is, but will move if she needs to warm up/cool down,
punkins fave atm is a breadstick box, but not exclusively. the bigger snakes seem to maintain a more even temperature to feel, than the wiggler- size may be relevant in thermo- thingy.

oh! and I had a thought about your sock- they come in pairs, so put the twin to her favourite one in the opposite end of the viv

Plissken always sleeps under a big bit of cork bark on the warm side, and never in the log on the cool end.

Iara sleeps in the open most of the time, and usually in her vines! She does sleep in the warm end, mostly in the open after eating.

Aguna stays in the entrance to to her log, slap bang in the middle of the faun, except when she has eaten, then its the warm end skull!

Sirae stays in the cool end under cork bark, and moves to her hides in the warm end after eating.

I might move the fauns about later too see if they move...

Jake is a bit like this. He has a like an archway log (if that makes sense?) He's had it since we first had him and has always slept under there. No matter where we move it he's always under it! Just recently we have kept it at the warm end for him as it's been a little chilly!! He does often go for a wander into the cool end and just sits amongst the substrate! So I guess he does cool down when he gets too hot, but seems to be attached to his little log hide! Interesting!

well. Romeo will only stay in one specific coconut hide. I plan on getting him something new though so hes not gonna be chuffed with me lol. Griffin will sleep in either of his hides. Hes not overly fussed. MacBeth turns all of his hides upside down and sleeps under the kitchen paper, or he pushes them both together and sleeps inside them both. Mim prefers her pringles tube slap bang in the middle of the viv. She doesnt even bother with her hot or cold hides anymore lol. Vedder likes his warm side hide and rarely ever is in his cold side one. And Ramona is the same as Romeo... she will only use one specific coconut hide. However she will use the other one to store ALL her poop in! She wont poo anywhere else!

My two corns don't seem too concerned about where they rest themselves! They're usually out and about most of the time, and one is particularly fond of acting like a green tree python on a branch!

Ernest does seem to prefer his "cave" but not exclusively and it is a small one and beginning to get a bit snug !
