Okay, I bought a timer switch today for the heat lamp, it was second hand (10p!) so it obviously has no instructions. It is quite simiar to this http://www.lake-renewable-energy.com/plug-in-timer---24hr-segment-timer-74-p.asp but is unbranded. It has a lever at the top, one side is a clockface the other is the on sign (just the line. I want it to come on for 12h per day, 7-7. I thought I'd set it up right but it is still on! please help me work it out, I cant seem to find the correct instructions on google!

the habistat mat stat, turns the mat on when the temp falls below the set limit and back off when it reachs temp continuously going on then off. so the stat is always on. one light indicates power and the other whether power is on to the mat or not.

the mat will not feel hot and possibly not warm, i recomend that you put two digi termometers until the temps are correct so you know that ones is not faulty

So once I get a stat, is the mat on all the time?
Georgina Posted - 12/02/2012 : 23:24:48
gdgd i would put one at each end. when you get your stat set it at 26 and let it level out and then up it by a degree until it settles again, mine are set at around 27 but reach 28.6 and dont vary more that 1 degree x look forward to seeing the set up pics x

Sure do, didn't come with the set up but was amongst the first things I bought :)
Georgina Posted - 12/02/2012 : 23:19:37
cool, sounds good. do you have a digital termometer?

He scatters the aspen when he's around that area so there currently isn't a lot there, and he was handled and fed the next day, I didn't find out until after reading on here that I was to let him settle. But once he was fed he was left a few days, possibly four, then handled little, then he entered shed mode so he was left completely. He has 2 hides, one at each end, an exo-terra cave warm end and a house thing the cool.

there should be barely any aspen over the mat, make sure the water bowl is as far away from the heat as possible, i would suggest a hid at each end and some cardboard tubes scattered. some people have one really long hide. how long did you let him settle in for before feeding and handling?
serena_08 Posted - 12/02/2012 : 22:57:04
He doesn't seem to favour any particular side either.
serena_08 Posted - 12/02/2012 : 22:55:00
Thats where I'm ordering from, it's all set up just waiting to be paid for lol. He was fed 11 days ago, all was fine but due to the shedding process he never got fed last Wed. I've not used the mat since I felt how hot it was, so in the day he just has the lamp on. I can't upload a pic now, but to describe he has a 2.5ftx1ftx1ft viv, left side has heat mat with a inch and a half of aspen layer, hide half on the mat (the mat is underneath the glass). Right side he has another hide, with some fake ivy. Then he has a big log thing and a bath around the centre...

i think you would be better off, not feeding and turning all heat sources off, order a stat from surry pets it works out about 22 pounds with next day delivery. if you have a mat you do not need a heat lamp. can you upload some pics of your set up?

He has just shed this morning (complete, eye scales and tail tip too) and he seems to be happy! It's a proper heat lamp, bulb is a 40w wilkos bulb, and the 'holder' is an Exo-Terra one. It's what came with the set up from the shop. And is a reputable reptile shop so I figured they knew what was good, I just weren't there when it was all bought as it was a surprise!

is it a proper heat lamp of just household bulb???
serena_08 Posted - 12/02/2012 : 22:10:33
And thank you for the input everyone, I will be getting a stat as soon as paypal let me transfer. And as I see that some people have issues with the Microclimate stat I have opted for the Habistat one, and then the lamp will be no more!

Yeah as above, 2 heat sources and no stat is just asking for trouble even with a timer. The mat should be on a mat-stat and the light a dimmer stat. Might be easier to just ditch the light and heat off a mat. Or switch to an energy saving bulb for viewing only.
a33272 Posted - 12/02/2012 : 20:50:05
what ever the heat source it needs stating as scaly said. if the room is kept pretty warm an u havnt feed for a few days it rather turn all sources off.

as for the timer pull all the blue bits out when u want the timer on then when that section gets to the big arrow it should trigger the switch on the top an flick it to the on bit. best thing it plug a desck lamp in an try it haha
