Was in the local garden centre when I saw some peanut feeders for birds when I realised with some modifications it would make a cheap and simple lamp guard.
You would need to use quite a wide diameter sized cage but i think it would work quite well.
Saw this on amazon to give you some idea what I mean

Or spend another couple of £ and go for the IKEA LED strips.

Ordinary lights, even low wattage, can generate excess ambient heat. The LEDs are cool running.

I might build one just to see if can be done all my lamps have guards so I don't really need any myself but it would be an interesting project so to speak.
