I have 2 corns one about 3 n half the other is just over a year how old do they have to be before having them sexed?? |

The only 100% faultless sexing you can do is probing (or popping if a hatchie) and getting a male result.
Female results can be both females and males that clench (though people who know what they are doing should spot the clench and have another go).
Tail length or shape is not reliable enough for sexing for breeding purposes or cohabiting but if you are just wanting to know out of curiosity then its perfectly adequate and should it be wrong it wont mind been called a girl if its a boy, lol.
Another way to know you have a boy is wait for breeding season and be disgusted when it pops its bits out and drags then along your arm. (Spot is disgusting). |

should be easy to tell with buster and casper, lucky is probable too small at the min. if i rember right pratical reptile keeping are doing an article on sexing snakes by appearance in next months issue so that should be an intersting read. |

Buster is 4ft and Lucky about 18in they just taper, Casper is a little over 2ft and his tail is markedly noticable it is a short skinny thing. I'm not that bothered as they all live seperately just curious. |

sounds like they could be female, i'm still trying to decide with 8, how big are yours? think its supost to be easer when they are bigger. Going of the tail can give you an idea but its not 100%. |

There is also the counting method. It's not 100% reliable but it does seem to work most of the time. Wait for the snake to shed (can try counting on their body but it can be tricky). Count the ventral scales (from the front back to the vent), then count the subcaudal scales (vent to tail tip, these come in pairs but only count each pair as 1). Then do ventral minus subcaudal. If the number is over 154 the snake is probably female. If it is under 154 the snake is probably male.
This is based on the idea that in general a male's tail is longer so that it can house the hemipenes.
Another slightly simpler method is to count the pairs of scales from vent to tail tip and just go by that number. If it is between 59 and 70 pairs it is most like a female and if it is between 70 and 80 pairs it is most likely a male.
Apollo was male using both these methods and it proved to be accurate in his case. |

Hi Lou, Caspers tail is short and thin not thick, the other two just taper after the vent. |

males tend to have a thicker tail after the vent, where as with a female the tail is tappers off straight after the vent, hope that helps |

I THINK it's longer tails are males, shorter tails are female. Don't think this is full proof though! Sure someone with more experience will reply shortly  |

I've seen pics of 'probing'....does not look pleasant for the snake! I think i'll just make a guess by tail size when he's older lol. |

they can only be probed past the hatchling stage and its not something you really want just anyone to do either take them to a shop or a reptuable breeder to get it done properly as there are risks with probing if not done correctly |

Yeah probing is ya best bet, popping is only something that can be done to hatchies. |

You can take them to be probed now, I think it's just really young corns where the chance of damage is higher, so people 'pop' them. Someone more experienced will come and tell you though :) |
