Hiiii My viv is the solid wood type, at the moment I have the mat under approx 1cm of wood chip, temps seem to be fine. Butttttt... When i have been researching such sites as habistat ect i am getting conflicting information. On the last heatmat i bought it said do not put under subrate as heat can build up and can cause fire and this is backed up on some other cornsnake websites. Also the mat itself should be fluid proof but the conection block is not. On the habistat website they show the heatmat placed on the ceiling of the viv. On others I have seen it placed on the sides. What method is really best, I do like the idea of it being on the ceiling, has anyone had theres placed there and does it work well . thanks russ |

Where you have it is fine and as long as you have the mat running throught the stat it wont build up too much heat.
Hope that makes sence. |

On the ceiling? Never heard that before :S
That wouldn't be a good idea either, as the heatmats only warm up what they're close to/touching - and don't raise the ambient temperature like a bulb would.
My heatmats just on the bottom of the viv covered with substrate; attached to a stat. My temps are fine during the night :) |

I do know that with the tank type its supposed to be underneath so it can breath and to stop the heat building up to much as it can crack the glass. Id not seen heat mats on the ceiling before but habstat seem to think its a good idea from there diagrams |

I have a wooden viv and have had my heat mat inside under about 1 - 2" of substrate without it causing any problems. I do use a lamp though for extra heat. |

Dont put a heatmat inside the tank.. they heat up the more weight that is put on it. So believe me it will heat up just fine |

Confused?? you will be.
Basically if your using a glass tank/viv or plastic faunarium/RUB put the heatmat under the tank, in a wooden viv put the heatmat inside under the substrate (some people like to put a vinyl tile or lino over it) What ever your using and however you have it set up the important thing is to run any heatmat throught a stat with the sensor on the substrate - if it starts to get a wee bit warm the stat will cut the power untill it cools down. Jobs a good un! |

Cheers Lee, decided just put the corns on, (Would have been all night otherwise as my photoshop skills are zero this is the best paintpot has to give me) If you fancy trying to get the rest of the zoo on something then crack on,i'm sure Gerry, ripple, runt, rover, felix, Mr Hankey, Boycee, Marlene, Ruby, DD and Oz would probably really like it. |

Shhh, Lee! I know, but i got a new viv stack being built at the mo so all amimals will have upgraded homes. I'll also have a boys and girls viv for the corns to stop anymore unplanned teenage Mums - gonna keep 1 viv in the loft for breading (Shagpile carpet and a bit of barry white being streamed in through the vents) and get rid of the other spare viv quick before the temptation to fill it!!!
Anyone interested in a 2ft glass terrarium with a small crack in the side??? Sound but probably not water-tight. Going free once my runners and glass arrrive.
