Hey people new to this place, am hoping to be the owner of a corn snake come friday, picked up tank n bits to go with yesterday. So decided to have a look through the site, defo seems to be alot of queries on right n wrongs on heat mats.so here goes i got a habitat heat mat with the tank yesterday and have put it in the tank taped down, now from what i can gather a stat n timer are the next things to get to safeguard overheating?????? have left it on at various intervals through the day whilst home to see how hot it does get(7 watts dont seem to heat up too much), does the mat have to be on constantly or is this basically where the stat n timer come in to play once temp level met they shut off???????

hi and welcome, you only need the stat not the timer, the stat will control the temperture by switching it off when it gets hot enough and then back on once the temp has droped a bit.Are you using a glass tank or a wooden viv?I would also recommend getting a digital thermometer as the dial ones are inaccurate

hello, and welcome. :)

As above, wooden or glass?? I would suggest putting the heatmat on the outside under 1/3 of the viv, heatmats can cause burns.

Hi and welcome. If it is a glass viv the heat mat should go under the viv. I dont have a stat as mine is on a timer. It turns of every 1/2 hour and keeps the temp between 81 and 85.

heya and welcome
a thermostat is essential, a timer is unneccessary. using Remmy's methos the viv could potentially get too hot or too cold, using a stat will stop that happening.

My temps stay between 81-85 on the timer. An on-off stat isnt a lot different, it doesn`t keep the temp exact. It will turn off when it is over the set temp and turn back on when it is under. A pulse stat is better at keeping the temp regular.

ok thanks for the responce people, have found very conflicting info about heat mats, one of my friends who has kept snakes for yrs has his heat mats inside tanks n hasnt caused any problems, i have a glass tank and have ordered the mini stat 100 along with faunarium as is only a baby we are getting.

also if i was to put the mat under the tank could i not simply tape some polystyrene over the heat mat just in tht area??? as glass tank is on wooden desk???

Personally I wouldnt want to risk putting my snakes health at risk by putting the mat inside the viv as they can get quite hot, even with substrate on top I think most corns tend to burrow. I have an exo terra glass viv that is built so it is slightly raised between the heatmat and the viv, this is also on a wooden surface, but with the gap above it allows airflow.

for fauns and glass vivs the heatnat is best ouside the viv, with spacers/feet to allow airflow. in wooden vivs the heatmat is fine inside the viv so where you put the heatmat depends on your set-up.
and Remmy, it sounds like you got lucky but a thermostat removes the element of luck and keeps the temperature to whatever you set it to

I did experiment a bit with it to get the right settings gingerpony. I am not saying that this is the correct way but at the moment it works for me and if Punumbear had a time clock it would work. You are the expert gingerpony and i will never argue with an expert.

Anerys are great, but as for the majority, I'd say a lot tend to have normals!

I know, which is why I said most people have them, not anerys. I was agreeing, I think the but got in the way, pardon the pun.

DAY2)ok well hmmm havent had the greatest of starts with her, let her chill in her faun yesterday and she did start leaving the hide towards the evening, she did of course get out twice, first time found her behind the bedroom door.. so scooped her up popped her back in the tank.
I then found her caught in the door hinge when i went to to bed last night, closed the door n let it click shut n i was wondering why it felt stiffer than normal, turned light up and doh.. theres the snake hanging out the door hinge ..., i freaked out opened the door poked rest of her body back through... n popped her back in faun. she is moving but very slowly really hope i havent broken anything n its all bruising as left her alone last night to get over the trauma poor thing..!!!!! the side air vents n all small gaps have now been taped up.. she is still gettin plenty of air as entire lid has very slight air holes in em.BUT OH MY GOD THOUGHT SNAKES WERE MENT TO BE SAVVY ... OR IM JUST NOT MENT TO HAVE SNAKES..:(.
