i got my stats on ebay for £20 and free postage and they arrived next day both times i ordered them. they are microclimate ministat 100 and work very well.
It was the same for me. The guy at the reptile shop basically said to me "You don't need a stat in this country". Like it doesn't get warm enough to warrant one! :(
aww poor thing see i was told by several driffrent people i didnt even need a heat mat???? but i was like nooo they need one i dont have a thermostat can any one tell me how they work as im soooooooooooo confused reading so many driffrent things about them
A thermostat is a little box with a dial on it which you use you set the required temperature. It has 3 cables running from it, one is a power cable, one is a cable with a socket on the end and one has a probe on the end. You thread the probe through a hole in the viv and place it on top of the heatmat. you plug your heatmat into the socket and then plug the stat into your mains. the heatmat will heat to the temperature set and then the thermostat will turn the heatmat off until it drops a couple of degrees and then it will swtich on again. That way it regulates the temperature of the heatmat so that it can't overheat.
Thats terrible.. thank goodness I use a stat.. if your going to have an exotic pet then you should be prepared to spend the money on getting the proper requirements!
STICKY this thread, even as a novice myself, I dont understand some people, are they really that stupid ? it doesn't hurt to read up about things or ask questions before investing in a pet, crikey, that poor snake, I really couldn't live with the guilt of neglecting anything, I hope they dont have children either, because in my eyes, if you can neglect an animal then they could neglect a child too, so sad, I hope the snake is ok now and has a loving home, poor thing

You would be surprised. Not everyone is stupid, they believe what there petshop tells them and put trust into people they think are experts, I did. People even faced with these pictures sometimes refuse to get a stat.
I was just at myvets today and the vet told me better not to use a thermostat but to get heatmats that i could use under the viv and not inside , due to when it switches heatat bk on its puts it on full power so more likely to burn snake more . i got Robin n Albion 2 weeks ago and no digital thermometers no thermostat nothing . so not sure wat to do .

Your vet is a bit strange. A mat under a wooden viv would have to work at full capacity to get heat into the viv, what with wood being quite good at insulating...
A stat cuts the power to a mat when it reaches the temp it has been set to, and applies power when the temp drops, so unless the probe is moved off the mat, it will keep it around the desired temp.
Unfortunately you get so much conflicting advice from different people....and a lot of it is wrong advice and even comes from so-called specialists, like vets, breeders and people in reptile shops . I use the word 'wrong', but there isn't any right or wrong really, it's down to what you think is best....but with a lot of things, like this, the majority agree and can't understand any other view.
As Dancross said, a heatmat under the wooden viv would have to work so much harder to reach the right heat within the viv, it's much more likely to malfunction or cause a problem. And as for not using a thermostat....the heatmat will only heat to the temperature you programme the thermostat to, so unless you put it up as far as it goes what your vet has said won't happen. The important thing is to make sure the probes are secure, as Dan has said.
I'm glad you're still going to get the stat. If I'm told something by as so-called 'expert', I always check it out on here....and I'm glad you are doing the same .
