Hi,
I'm looking to upgrade to a wooden viv from a faun. I recall reading somewhere on here that some people put the heatmat under tiles which are sealed around the edges so that for any cleaning the poo etc is not baked onto the heatmat?
Can anyone advise on type/thickness of tile or actually whether this is generally good practice? Is it possible to use something quite natural like a slate type tile or is ceramic okay? Or even those hardwearing vinyl type tiles like Amtico?
Any thoughts/opinions?

| With corns, it's not so much an issue really. They don't flood or do poops the size of your head xD If your worried about it, you can pop some kitchen towel on top of the mat and then put the substrate on top, but putting tiles on top seems excessive. I've never actually heard of anyone doing it for their corns before :) |

I've slate, ceramic tiles and vinyl on top of mine.
Some are still covered, others are just in the viv with a hide on top.
It's preference really, so long as it's stat'd and sits at the right temp for the reptile, then it's up to you how you cover it.
The looks are for us more than anything.
The only issue you may find with some hard tiles is that they wont sit properly on the mat due to the connector block, I did use flotex at one point as well, that was brilliant stuff. Carpet that can go in the washing machine. :D

| snake doesnt need protecting from the mat if you are using a thermostat. The temps wont get high enough to burn your snake in this case |

| I don't have anything covering my mats apart from a sprinkle of apsen. Using a coth and reptile discenfecant soon gets rid of any poop on them. As for covering the heatmat with tiles without a thermostat, that sounds dangerous. |

| I use sealant to seal the mat to liquids as they are not waterproof but as above corn poop is not an issue, my Boa destroyed a mat with a tsunami of smelly wee but I've never seen anything overly runny come out of a corn. Though there is nothing stopping you, I was thinking of lining my new vivstack with lino just for easy of cleaning. |

| I actually WAS told in a pet shop a few weeks ago (not my local) that he uses tiles instead of thermostats for ALL his snakes. I don't really understand the logic of it but how and ever! |

Tiles obviously have some sort of magical property regarding keeping heat down that I've not heard of.  |
