Hello there, we've just adopted a lovely 2 year old corn snake, we got it of a advert on gumtree, he's come with a load of frozen baby chicks which we were told he has 1 a week, we have had snakes before and always fed them mice, is it ok to feed them chick's? I would rather feed him mice but would it upset his tummy with the change of diet? any advice would be helpful thanx  |

Hello and welcome to the forum.
My understanding was that chicks were a treat and mice were the normal diet. I'm not sure of the exact nutritional values etc so wont go on about that but I think most if not all snakes on here are mice fed (with the occasional rat). |

| hello, can't wait to see pics of your new addition once settled in, mine are almost a year and have only ever had mice, did you ask the previous owner why they fed him chicks |

| sometimes chicks are fed as a hopeful feed to very troublesome feeders... perhaps this was the case and the snake just preffered and continued eating them? There are some people who will use chick skins over mice etc to scent them, again for troublesome feeders. |

| Thank you for the welcome and the advice :-), I didn't go pick him up the other half did and he didn't think to ask her, I've deleted her number as well so can't ring her to ask, think I might try him with mice and then if he doesn't eat it then stick with the chick's, I have had a bit of a google and it does say chick's are best for just treat's. |

| it depends how big or small he is, the guide is 1 half times the body width, my yearlings are on fuzzy's but others are on small mice, but if very small pinky's, need a pick with something for comparrison |

| He's 2 years old and about 5 and half foot long apparently, we haven't had a chance to get him out yet as we only got him yesterday and he had just eaten so we've left him be and will get him out tomorrow night. |

| i would probably think at that size he'd manage a medium mouse, possilby larger, but without seeing a pic or his size its difficult to say, ask where you buy your food to see the difference in mouse size and use the 1 half x body width size for a guide |

| my biggest chilli is on large mice and she is just under 4ft long although i think i need to find her something larger cos it doesnt even leave the slightest bump! My littler one is just under 3ft but i havent fed him yet as only got him last week but he is apparently on large mice too, in comparison to chilli he is a lot smaller but about the right size for a large mouse. I dont really think length has much to do with it, its weight and girth that you need to check. but at a guess id say a chick is roughly the same size as a large mouse. |

| good post i was wondering what size mice to feed phoenix. the previous owner said she had always fed her chicks, only got a couple left then its onto large mice if their about the same size |

| Lovely snake. i agree wiv all the above. a large mouse should be fine. Although, not to throw a spanner in the works, i have heard that some snakes, if been fed on a diet of chicks, it could be tricky to entice him to change to mice as they can favour chicks. Im sure someone will corect me if they have had a different experience..... |

| chicks are fine but a two year old should be on adult mice . corns will eat chicks/ birds in the wild but mice is the best nutritional value for them. ween him off them if you think it would stress him not have them, but I think you'll be surprised when you give him a mouse. first try and get a mouse similer in size maybe slightly smaller than the chick to start of with, then move onto a bigger meal suitable for him. Just my opinion. |
