Hi, I'm lizz, my 15 yr old son and I are looking into getting a corn snake. We are thinking around the end of the summer holidays would be a good time. We are busy looking into their needs and where to get one from. We are unsure whether to get a new baby or an adult. We will be total newbies to snakes.
We do keep several other pets - dog, cat and also a seahorse marine tank. We would take having a snake as a new pet quite seriously and hope to be able to meet all of its needs and find good advice.
Can see we have lots of reading to do and any advice would be really appreciated.
Thanks

hi and welcome to the forum, yearlings are good starters for someone getting into corns. They are established feeders etc and may be used to handling. But whatever you decide welcome to the world of corns

Lol! Thanks so much for the warm welcome! And Thanks for the info on a good age. Really looking forward to getting started and can't wait to pick one! Pic of the seahorse tank? Ok! lol! Just need to work out how to upload images!!
Any reliable place supplying corn snakes in the north-east? How great are the risks of buying from a private sale compared to buying from, say, a shop or retail outlet? Hey scottishbluebird - we keep ferrets too. Love yours in the picture! Aren't they brilliant? lol!

I adore ferrets, have had several over the years, peanut is a rescue, would not usually only have one furball, but he plays with the dogs all the time! If you are wondering, he is not eating the muffin, it has ferret paste on the back, was for a mates birthday card, was only way to keep him still, and flame on candle is a cut out google pic! (sad i know)

Wow! Thanks for such a warm welcome! Its great! We are based in the whitley bay area of the north-east. I know of one good (?) retail outlet not far from here but thats the only one as far as I'm aware of round this neck of the woods.
Our ferrets are rescues too! We got them (there's 3, 1hob, 2 jills) from the north-east ferret rescue. They are complete nutters! I'll have to post a few questions on another thread as they are starting to build up!
I was never really bothered much about snakes before, not knowing much about them except that they didn't seem very controllable. But a month or two ago I saw a woman buying one from the local pet shop. They didn't give her any proper info, just said to feed it crickets - which they provided. no feeding sheet, etc they seemed really keen on the sale instead and I looked at this little teeny thing in the plastic box and thought it was great, a really amazing little thing! Although I know it'll grow a whole lot bigger! I think thats started something !!! Lol! Then a week later my 15yr old son went to the same shop to pick up some live Artemia for my seahorse and he came home full of the wonders of the little snake he saw. So, I think its a good thing to get into together.

there's several reptile shops round here, a big one in darlington, a small one in durham, near tesco's on dragonville and the other at team valley, they're the 3 that i know about, depends how far you want to travel

Hi and welcome to the forum. The planning stage is so exciting isn't it. The only advise I can give you about shops is maybe stay away from the one where you saw the woman buying the snakes. Feed it crickets??????
