Hi guys
I should confess from the off i dont actually own a cornsnake yet when i lived in a shared house we had 2 "house snakes" one albino cali kingsnake and a common corn. So im not completely clueless with regards to snakes needs and care however owning my own is a diffrent thing altogether and i want to make sure i give my snake the best life i possibly can. I have various other pets atm (4 tropical fishtanks 2 chinchillas 2 cats and a pair of cockatiels) but have been longing for a snake of my own for many years. I've aquired a vivarium it is 25 inchs high 25 wide and 25 deep i know this is going to be a bit big initially (and probably a bit small ultimately but i have plenty of fishtanks at my disposal should i need them lol) the place from where i plan to purchase my corn informed me its not a good idea to put them into a big viv straight away as it will stress them out. I am just trying to do a bit of research and get everything in place before i go out and buy my snake im sure things have probably changed a bit since we had our two snakes. I hope nobody will mind me submitting a list of probably really stupid questions at some point in the coming days/weeks as i said i just want to get everything right.
I look forward to getting to know you all and obviously learning more about the wonderfull world of corn snakes |

Hi and welcome to the forum. It's great that you are doing your research before purchasing your corn. There is a search function at the top right of the page which is a fantastic tool. I learnt so much when I first started using searches, much of it stuff that I didn't even realise I needed to know. If you need to double check anything then we are more than willing to answer any questions. |

Thanks simmy/kdlang actually i read that thread earlier lol ive spent the last 2 nights trawling the posts on here making sure ive compiled the right list of equipments things to avoid and making sure i can meet the requirements to keep my future purchse happy it just all seems a bit straightforward i cant help but think im missing something lol Its so cool how helpfull and friendly you have all been i would never go out and just buy any pet and hope for the best i always make sure i can meet any animals needs before i can take it on (though i do have a wee bit of a problem saying no to homeless/unwanted pets whatever they may be) I do actually have another couple of questions (sorry)
Thermostats seems to be a bit of a debate as to wether theese are needed ? .we didnt have one for either of our old snakes (going back over ten years ago now )i want to do this properly so if the general opinion is that they are required i will buy one can you buy heatmats with thermostats built in ?
Are there any breeders in the south west england area (im in somerset) i have always preferred to obtain animals direct from breeders whenever possible because it bugs me not knowing where something has come from or how it has been kept
Also just wondered what the numbers on everyones posts were im assuming its a breeding thing but would be gratefull if someone would explain it please thanks
Thanks again |

Hi and welcome..the numbers relate to sex of animal. The first number is the number of males, the second number is the number of females and the third number is unsure/unsexed.
And yes you do need a thermostat. It ensures that the heat mat/light bulb(which ever option you choose to heat your viv with) does not get get too hot a) beyond the snakes required temp and b) too hot that the heat burns the snake. You also need a digital thermometer to read the tempreture so you can adjust the thermostate accuratly I hope you enjoy the forum |
