I happened to have a spare heatmat knocking about and a thermometer so though it would be a good idea to see what would happen if I plugged one in without a stat and to demonstrate this to film the results. It is true I do have far too much time on my hands.
Anyway after a bit of editing (I'm no Spielberg) and uploading this is the video I have put together of that process.

| I have mats that would do the same, that is my smallest mat kept as a spare for the Tarantula in winter. I didn't want to use a powerful and big mat, I wanted to show even the little ones need a stat. |

| I actually left it overnight it didn't get any hotter than the reading at about 4 hours (it had actually cooled a little by the morning). |

I tested thermal blocking with a similar way.
1 large mat, 1 stat, 2 thermometers.
Stat and 1 thermometer probe were resting on the mat, the other thermometer probe was held down on the mat with my bare foot.
Less than 45 mins later and the thermometer under my foot was hitting close to 50c and was getting hard to keep my foot down, whereas the one with the stat probe was reading 25c.
It's actually quite amazing how much difference there is when pressure is applied compared to just being held on. It's one of the reasons that we say to have the stat probe in a hide because the snake will hold pressure down on the stat probe which will warm up as the snake does.
I also think that lotabob is trying to say is that the mat he left for ages and hit the temp in the vid, but due to heatmats being contact heaters if they had more contact on than a small hide, the heat would be a lot greater.
I recommend trying it, get a heat mat on the carpet and put a therm probe under your foot, and one resting on the mat next to your foot, and look at (and feel) the difference. |
