I'm really not happy with the mat stat I've fitted, not sure if I've set it too high/low or what. Our snake has never been out since I fitted it last week.He spends the whole time up the back of the poly background on what should be the warm end of the tank (but it's off most of the time).I've been checking regularly through the night and have never seen him out, although my daughter has him out every day so I know he's fine. I'm thinking about getting a pulse stat to hold a better temperature, would that work on a 7 watt heatmat? |

How have you set the probe up? Is it in the faun or under the faun? Could just be a case of thats where it likes to hide? |

Some corns just don't come out much. It may be that now you have the temperatures regulated he is more comfortable and doesn't feel the need to move around much.
Just to make sure that it is just him being a quiet corn, can you answer the following questions. What size is he? What size viv is he in? Where is the probe for the thermostat situated? How are you measuring the temps? What are the temps in the warm end?
I am not a great fan of the poly backgrounds. I had one in one of my vivs once as I think they look brilliant but Izzy spent all his time behind it and I had to empty out most of the viv to get him out. It drove me mad so I just got rid of it in the end. Mind you, he still hides away alot but it's alot easier to get him out.

The mat stat probe is under the tank (exo terra terrarium)with the heatmat, the digital thermometer is in the tank. It seems to go on and off a lot, and not staying on for any length of time. He's always out at night, but there's no sign of him being out, he usually pushes things about in the tank and it's just starting to worry me now.

He's 26" long and is in a 12"x12"x12" exo terra terrarium. I wanted to get something bigger but was advised by the person I bought him from to keep him in a small tank as that's what he was used to..he was actually in with another the same size in a 12" tank. I plan to buy either an 18" or 2ft upgrade at Christmas for him. The temperature in the warm end is at 30.2c and the heat is off at that temp.I might do away with the poly background then and replace with some fake plants or something, maybe it's just too cosy behind there |

Those backrounds are a pain in the ass!! I took mine out of my exo terra and just put it behind the tank. (still looks good). My snake used to hide in there for days at a time. I used to have to rip her out at feeding time. I advise you just to take out the backround before you go and buy another stat! |

the matstat sounds like it's working fine, though you might want to turn it down a little, so it turns off at 29*C. i'd say the warm hide prolly isn't that appealing, maybe due to size or direct sunlight?
i'd be tempted to remove the background and just tape some newspaper round 3 sides of the viv on the outside as a temporary fix, after addressing and 'hide' issues, and making sure the temps are right inside the viv where the snake is likely to be and using a digi thermometer
sounds like he's due for a viv upgrade soon.......i'd recommend a wooden rather than glass viv |

I'll get the background out today and see what happens. He has a nice size hide in the cool end, the warm end hide isn't great, but have a new one that's a half coconut (daughter bought it for his birthday tomorrow) and is more enclosed. I can get him a bigger viv sooner if he needs it, would I need a light in a wooden viv? I chose the exo terra as it seems to be escape proof, are the wooden ones just as good if you have a lock? Edited to add: I think I've discovered why he's not been so active, got him out to remove the background and he has blue eyes, so must be going to shed soon |
