Hey guys i'm a lil bit worried I checked my temps today and the cool end of the viv was at 24 the hot end however was in the 40s! Touched the heat mat its red hot I checked the fuse on the stat that was fine so i’m guessing the stats gone belly up (it was an old one I borrowed from my uncles brother who used to keep water dragons) ive been all over town to everywhere that stocks reptiles/equipment only one of them actually had thermostats in stock there are 4 places in my town that sell reptiles and snakes I think its pretty shocking they don’t stock ALL of the equipment needed to keep them! Anyway the one place that did have any only had the big ones or the digital plug-in type one of the guys advised me to use a timer plug so the mat comes on hourly then off then on etc not sure I like that idea Couldn’t really afford it but ive just bought a brand new stat from eBay
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Ministat-100-Reptile-Thermostat-FREE-DELIVERY-/110721424811?pt=UK_Pet_Supplies_Reptiles_Spiders_Insects&hash=item19c782ddab
The thought of no stat after reading all the horror stories online whilst researching them fills me with absolute dread Eddie seems absolutely fine ive thoroughly checked him over and he’s got no signs of burns etc though I read somewhere prolonged overexposure to heat can cause brain damage Ive raised the tub from the bottom of the viv now so there’s a half inch gap between the base of the tub and the glass of the viv which has dropped the temperature to 30.1 (though it’s fluctuating a bit as its really hot here today) Can anyone offer any advice on what I should do while I await the arrival of the new stat? I’m really concerned...i tested everything before i got the snake and it was all fine
p.s one of the places we went to a supposed "aquatics/reptile superstore" which has a pretty bad reputation in the town anyway personally I wont buy anything from them except fish food for my Oscar was feeding they’re snakes when we got there so we decided to hang for 5 and watch they just threw the mice/rats into the vivs they had a gorgeous adult common corn someone had placed cork bark in the viv with a price tag sellotaped around it (badly) and the snake was all tangled up in it ugh we pointed it out to them they did eventually remove it but we had to remind them i’m disgusted sorry for the long post guys

Turn the mat off, is the safest option for now. And yes prolonged exposure to that level of heat will cause neurological problems |

Nope ignore the timer idea, it wont work and you wont know how loong it takes to warm beyond what is safe.
As for damage to the heat, if it is alert and acting normal then would just treat as normal. |

He'll be fine without the heat mat until your new thermostat arrives, but don't feed him until then as without the extra heat he won't be able to digest any food. It won't do him any harm to miss a feed. |

You still can't watch it 24 hours a day. Honestly, the best thing you can do for your snake right now is to turn off the mat until your new stat arrives |
