Ok so I'm in the process of setting up 2 new vivs and have a question on the set up, may seem daft but I've never used wooden vivs before and don't like using lamps for heat so....

Can a heat mat be set up inside a wooden viv? I have had it suggested that they can be placed on the side of the viv instead of the floor since the heat would radiate foward but not sure how I'd set up a stat for that?

Yes it can be set up in the viv and on the floor of the viv is fine. As long as you have a thermostat and digital thermometer for it you'll be fine

we use mats inside wooden vivs, we only secure the mat by pinning it down with the hide/other decor and have the thermometer probe and stat probe rubber-banded together laying on top of the substrate

Thanks guys, I thought it should be ok as long as it was on a stat but thought I'd check first.

Didn't intend to do both at once and prob will have an empty one for a while but buying 2 of everything is saving me a fair amount of cash in the long run so wh not? :)

Heat rocks get LOTS of bad press...they often get too hot and cause health issues/burns to the snake - they may have improved, but they really aren't needed (a heat mat with a normal rock on top would be fine)

I do the same as GP. My therometer has a litttle sucker though that I lick and stick onto the heatmat to stop it moving about too much though and little stones ontop of that.

I make sure the heat mat is clean and no aspen is in the way or dust and really press it down XD. Althoguh after a week or so it becomes unstuck that's why I use the rocks too ^^ tempted to seal it in place.

heat rocks are usually run without a stat, and tbh i'm not sure how you could set one up statted.........hence the issue with them being too hot!
