Hi, Im Snake luver, im 12 years old and in knida nervous about handling my baby sbake im getting in acouple of days. This is my first time having a snake so i need some advice. How do I act if it bites me cuz i really dont want to hurt it if it does. Can I play music in the same room as it? How do I keep my dogs away from it? (The vivariums in my room and one of my dogs can open doors!) i dont want to ask any more questions so im just going leave it as that.

hello and welcome here,
if your snake does bite you do not pull back easier said than done though sometimes, norm when they do bite you they let go straight away so should be fine :)
i do play music with the snakies in the same room
as for the dogs no idea, dont have that problem, however i do have cats and although one would love to 'play' with the snakie she doesnt really bother them as much as she used to when i first got them, she does 'help' at feeding times but i just tell her of if she gets to close or whatever and she has been fine. other cat doesnt care really.
but if you think your dogs is going to stress ya snakie out you may have to lock ya door or something. |

Even a bite from a fully grown Corn bite doesn't really hurt. It is more like a bit of a nip. Don't pull back tho' as you could damage his mouth or teeth. He'll soon let you go.
Ask questions, it is better to get an answer to something you are uncertain about instead of maybe doing something wrong. |

Hi Bethany, welcome to the forum. You must be so excited at getting your new addition.
As said already, if your snake bites you, it really doesn't hurt. It's a bit like catching yourself on the rough part of velcro. It does make you jump though and you do instinctively pull back. Thankfully corns usually let go as soon as they bite you so you shouldn't hurt him but just check your skin for any teeth that may have been left behind and keep an eye on his mouth for a few days.
I have played music in the same room as my snakes however I wouldn't go playing music loud or with lots of bass as snakes use vibrations to detect food and sense predators etc so it could stress him out.
I have had quite a few dogs since I started having snakes as I am a foster carer. They are all taught from the start that the snakes are out of bounds. Some of them do go up and sniff the vivs, I even had a dog and one of the snakes nose to nose through the viv doors once. I do have to make sure my current pup is asleep while I change all the waters as he tries to get in the vivs while they are open but other than that, he isn't really that bothered. I think your dogs will soon get the message if you teach them the 'leave-it' command. I'm sure once they are used to the new smell that the viv will bring then they wont be bothered too much with it.

Hey and Welcome! :)
When I first got my snake I was pretty nervous about it, I'd held snakes in the zoo and things but I'd never owned one! The first few days of handling I was a bit scared of taking him out of his viv and worried about him biting me (especially when he rattled his tail!), but as long as you're quick and confident you'll soon get used to it :) I love holding my snake now and am not worried about him biting me in the slightest! He managed to bite my Mum once, who said it didn't hurt one bit. He'll soon get used to you too, I've had mine for 4 weeks now and he doesn't rattle at me or anything.
Ohh, we also keep ours in the lounge and the TV is on in the evenings. He doesn't seem stressed by the noise at all! My cats aren't too interested in him either, which is good. They like the smell of his poop more :)

Welcome to the forum and snake ownership!
Please try not to worry about if your little snake bites you, it really won't hurt. In fact you might not even notice! Just follow the advice you've already been given.
Is it possible for you to have your snake out while the dog is out for a walk? What sort of dog is it? Most dogs will leave things if they are taught the leave command. A terrier might take a bit more time but they are clever so will learn to not touch as well. I'm sure a responsible adult will help you with the dog. I've got dogs of my own and I foster animals too and I've never had any problems but it's very responsible of you to think about these things....well done!
Good luck with your snake........you'll love being a snake owner and will probably end up wanting more!! |
