I thought it best to start a new post and say hello again.

Well I joined this forum 12 days ago without owning a corn snake, I have been reading lots of current posts and searching through old posts to get lots of advice. I feel I am ready to take ownership.

I had been going to get one from my nearest reptile shop, but after them not replying to my email and not seeming the most interested in what I was asking over the phone, I have found a local breeder that has 6 young corn snakes left (2xFemale, 4xMale), they were born 8th July 2011.
I had been sent six individual photo's of the snakes and i've decided to go with one of the females, both females have lovely markings on the body and head. I phoned up the breeder today and I have arranged to go around tomo at 11am to have a look and hopefully pbring one home, they are currently about 12 inches long, I have been told they are feeding/shedding well and being handled, they sound ideal to me....... no expert thought...not yet..

I did want a snake as young as possible so that it would get used to me (and the kids in time) and me to it... but hopefully 9-10 weeks old is still young enough for us to get used to each other...

I have my RUB ready drilled with air holes, although I did worry the 5mm holes were to big, the snakes are roughly as wide as my little finger apparently, I have two coconut half's as houses and a water dish, I was going to use kitchen towel on the floor but I think I will wait and see what the snake is used to and keep as many things the same, I'm getting the Exo Terra digital lcd thermometer in the morning, small pet shop near me is selling them for £9.99, I couldn't see them any cheaper online, also I need to look at thermostats tomo.

I had seen one online(http://www.surreypetsupplies.co.uk/microclimate-ministat-100.html) but it wouldn't arrive till tuesday morning, didn't know if you helpful people think I would be ok to order this one which would mean running my small 7w heatmat without a thermostat for the first day.....

My Heatmat is an Algarde 6"x11" (142mm x 274mm) 7watts, It will be positioned under the RUB - It does say in the instructions it is safe to use without a thermostat(I bet they all say this though) and it will provide a gentle background heat source, when I asked my local reptile shop about thermostats they told me they don't have any of there tanks fitted with one... also they said the heat from 7w isn't powerful enough to cause any damage.... I dunno?

Sorry, this post has gone on a bit long....

I will post some pictures once I get one home.

Very excited.....

def need pictures once you've brought the little 'worm' home. Personally i wouldn't run a heatmat without a stat, the risks are too great, a heatmat that gets too hot under plastic can actually melt the plastic and they get hot very quickly, perhaps wait until you have the stat before bringing your hatchie home

id say not to get the microclimate mini stat as i found there was too much difference between the high and low temperatures.

i strongly recommend a pulse HabiStat thermostat. i hot one brand new off ebay for £38 from a company called cornish crispa and now the temps are much steadier.

I wouldn't worry about the stat too much as I use the same one with only a 2 or 3 degree difference, I agree the habistat pulse is a better choice and I will purchase them when moving my snakes to their 4ft vivs but it really is nothing to concern yourself over, just enjoy your new house mate.
