I have just bought a 7 month old snow corn snake and have been given a hatchling box with him and told that my 4ft Viv is way to big for a snake of his age and size, I have a heat mat under the box (PLASTIC BOX) and am using aspen bedding i also have a coconut cave and a small water dish. I am worried that this set up is not right for the snake but i just dont have enough money to buy a bigger viv yet HELP PLEASE. NICE AND HELPFUL ANSWERS ONLY PLEASE!!!!!

How big is your RUB or faun? Have you got a stat controlling the temp and a digital thermometer? You should have a hide at the warm side and another at the cool end. Pictures of your set up will help us to see if it good enough or not.

When you say standard, is it digital and have you got a stat as well? Temps at hot end need to be high 20's but no hotter than 30 deg.

A stat is a thermostat that controls the temperature of the mat. Without one your mat can reach temperatures that are unsafe for snakey and possible risk of fires as well. You would be best to switch your mat off now and go and get a stat as soon as possible. Snakey will be fine at room temp as long as you don't have the windows open all the time.

could do with getting that temp up cos he's eaten recently, try a towel over the top to keep the heat in, but dont use a hairdryer unless you want baked snake

There is a great post on set up's which I suggest you read.

http://www.thecornsnake.co.uk/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=9878

If you do not have the money for all this stuff now you can always put a divide in you 4' viv. There is a post on here about this as well but not sure where it is.

As he has eaten recently it may not be best to switch the mat off now. Bit of a tricky one....

ditto all above- tho I would add that a 4ft viv would be dodgy this soon just because of the risk of escape through cable gaps, the space between the glass doors etc- you'd be amazed at what tiddlers can get through if there's a chance of freedom!!
Get the plastic tub sorted with a thermostat and digital thermometer, lots of hidey places to make snakey feel safe and secure, no handling for a week til he's used to the new smells sounds and movements in yr house, (just go in to change water and spot clean any poops)read the stickies on this site which have been invaluable to all of us when we got our first snakeys and er.....

oh yes, congratulations on the addition to your family!!!

and you thought there was no such thing as a stupid question....

1.2.0 corns: captain haddock, sharon the tiddler and Darling Debbie. plus 0.2.0 cali kings: spot and Numpty... not forgetting the delightful Miss Lovely-Gonzalez-La-Poop apricot pueblan milk snake, and we all miss the Lodger who thought he was a cobra....

Hi, this is a pic of my setup, cost about £50 max all in. My Corn is nearly 6 months old and seems very happy in here for now.
Hope this helps.
P.S. Moss hide is only on for shedding not all the time
