i disagree my JCP has 120w of I/R bulbs an they barely use anything.
the best way to look at how much power viv heaters use is the simple fact that the thermostats are only on 5amp fused plugs which means there pretty low power consumers.
when i set up my 2 vivs 1 with mat an 1 with 2 I/R bulbs before u put snakes in i turned all the house electric off an turned the stats right up to see what the meter did an then compaired it to other things.....
my conclusion was a tv on standby used more
I guess my bulbs use alot then because I do not run them on stats. They reach and stay at a constant temp providing the 120f hot spot that I need. Maybe I should consider using a larger wattage bulb and using a stat. We are on pay as you go for electric and since using the two bulbs and the two UV lights my electric has risen by at least £5 a week!
Tut tut, ALL heat sources should be statted.
I run 4 ceramic heat bulbs on stats, 4 heat mats with stats, a fish tank filter and lighting and I barely notice the difference. I just checked my monitor and I used £1.27 yesterday, I was in, had the TV on and the PS3 running for a bit too so its nothing at all. |

No, corn snakes need heat all the time unless you're in a climate where its already that temp (in which case you're thermostat should turn off the mat/bulb). However, you can if you want, turn the heat down by a couple of degrees at night. Wouldn't see much point with a mat, but with bulbs if they emmit light then its useful. |

Yes heat sources should really have a stat, But they are normal spot bulbs and keep to a constant heat. If I used a stat I would then have to increase the bulb size to say 100w or the stat would blow the bulb. If a bulb blows its just going to throw the trip as it would if it was used in a ceiling light in the kitchen. |

Stats can save electricity :P
Think the electricity bill with 5 heatmats was slightly more expensive than heating 1 viv with 100w bulb, but the bulb wasn't stated, just on a dimmer. |

A very special super, duper thanks for K :3 |
