Okay, so this is a bit of a weird one! I have inherited a carolina cornsnake (18 months old) and have been taking good care of her for a couple of months. I upgraded her home and got her a huge pimped out vivarium, have been feeding her once a week and cleaning out her. My only problem now is that I'm still too scared to pick her up!
I really want to take her out for 'play time' but I have a serious mental block. It has got to the point that I was thinking about selling her, but now I'm not so sure if I want to. Ideally I would like to 'hire' someone to take her out a few times for me so that I could watch and learn, and when I am confident I could carry on by myself. Is there anyone around the warwickshire area who would be willing to do this? Otherwise I just don't know what to do
Thanks |

Hi there and welcome to the forum
Unfortunately i don't live near you but i'm sure someone would be willing to help.
Simple bits of advice, make sure she's awake before you go in, just so you don't startle her usually opening the viv doors or tapping on them should wake her if asleep. If she's coiled up pick her coils up don't hesitate otherwise this will make her more nervous.
You could always start by just putting your hand in and letting her come to your hand and crawl over your hand, it is a confidnence thing and i'm sure when you've done it once you'll be fine and you'll be thinking what was all the fuss for. Would be a shame to sell her especially if you enjoy her company |

Are there no friends or family or even to previous owner who can come around and help you? Corn snakes are very placid and lovely to hold, yes I may be biased as I own 2 but my OH had never held a snake until the time of me getting my first and she was surprised how nice it was to hold one. Try just opening the door putting your hand on the floor of the viv and letting the snake come to you and slither over your hand so you get used to the sensation. |

You can always address the mental block first, Explain what it is that is stopping you picking her up. Then you will be more condifent (if ony a little bit more confident) when you go to pick her up. If you are worried about getten bitten then really you dont have to worry, corn snakes are very reluctant to bite and even if she did it really wont hurt.
I dont have a video of picking up a corn snake but I do have a video I made showing picking up my Boa, she was quite a bitey thing and wanted to demonstrate how she reacts to been picked up. The technique for picking them up is the same though, I always go in from the side with my hand flat and then pick them up in the middle of their body. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XttSzSB9_9o
Feel free to explain your fears though, I can assure you lots of people on here have felt the same when picking up a snake for the first time.

Hey, thanx for the all replies!! Okay so my fear is only down to that I'm really scared of getting bitten. I know that it doesn't hurt but I am a massive wimp, sorry! I have watched you tube clips but I really just can't bring myself to put my hand near her. I don't know anyone else who owns a snake, and all my friends are girly girls and are too scared to even come in my room! I know that I sound really pathetic but I've grown rather attached to the girl, so don't want to her give up. My postcode is CV37 9LX. Cheers |

Your bumbles fairly big might be idea to let her handle bumble to help get over her mental block. I'm to far away if she lived closer I would happily help as I've a fairly large snake and really docile Royal that love being handled.
